So I made another caftan dress. This time in cotton, with neckhole bias facings, finished sleeves, a cute drawstring detail....but Houston, there's a problem. She HATES it. Yep. Totally HATES.I thought it would be so cool and comfortable for summer. Loose, flowy, and cool.....but nope. She has clearly stated that she is NEVER wearing it again. She only likes the knit one. {Which she has worn almost every other day.....she says it's better than a nightgown.}Fine. I guess I can't win in ... View the Post
The Art of Homemaking: Skirting the Issue
"If you can't feed 100 people then feed just one."Mother TeresaEveryday I look in the Skirting the Issue Flickr Group to see another skirt added here and a few more skirts added there. Then we will receive an email from some wonderful woman who has organized a sewing group and tells us about the plans they have in their area. Later in the day I'll stop at the post office to find that we have a package (like the one pictured above from our sweet friend Jessica) full of skirts from another ... View the Post
$5 Friday—Well, Hello Doily
A little while ago I found a pile of random stuff in a bin in the craft room. Among other things I found this skirt. I made it a long time ago (like in January of 2011). It was during my season of putting doilies on everything (place mats, bulletin boards, bags, whatever held still...) Last night I went back and found the original post. The pictures are funny and not so awesome...especially the plugs hanging out of the wall in the background. (You can go check it out HERE ...but I ... View the Post
Thrifted Thursday. Vintage Trims.

You have it made. So, of course, while we were visiting family in Illinois for the summer, I had to do some garage-saling. And boy did I cram a lot of garage sales into two weekends (the last ... A Color-blocked Birthday Dress.
We have a girlie around these parts that is having a birthday this week. As well as a tea party with some very important people to celebrate the special occasion. So, of course a new dress was in order. I basically used my old stand-by vintage dress shape (here is the original tutorial) but didn't put on the sleeves or a collar. Just a simple, classic dress kicked up a notch with a bit of colorblocking. The only other difference to the original tutorial was adding an invisible zipper in ... View the Post
A Thank You.
When Liz and I dreamed up this series, we knew that it would be a good thing -- for us, at least. We have always wanted to give back through sewing, and we have in little ways. A skirt here, a dress there, a baby gown here and some fabric dolls there. But Skirting the Issue has changed us. Really and truly. It has shown us that this big, wide world of sewing blogs is fantastic and amazing and just down-right marvelous. We will remember that each one of you took the time to sew a skirt--with ...
