Awhile back I was out of town visiting my brother who happens to live nearby to my most favorite thrift store ever. And because he loves me he consented to take me and my three kids over to prowl the store for awhile---he even walked the kids around the store and kept them entertained so I could rummage through all the patterns and smelly fabric. (Ah! The scent of moth bally polyester!!!) Anyways when we went to leave he and Simon had a purchase to make---a big, thick, old book called "The ... View the Post
$5 Friday: Wierd Wal-Mart Knit—Another Buffalo Gals Look that Didn’t Make the Cut
Back in November when I showed Gracie's Buffalo Gals Lookbook I didn't show all the other pieces that I had made that I didn't feel like "fit" with the collection. This is one of them. It wasn't that I didn't like the leggings or that I accidentally made them 10 sizes to small. I just didn't like how they looked with the other items I had made. So Grace got to wear them and didn't even have to get her picture taken in them...until the other day when we were all inside for the afternoon ... View the Post
A Snowball Quilt and other odds and ends.
I can finally share some projects that I made before Christmas for some holiday handmade gifts. This snowball quilt has finally reached its new owner, but I got to sneak a few pictures first. And although I barely finished hand-stitching the binding on Christmas afternoon, it was well-received when she opened it. I used Riley Blake Design's Alpine Wonderland by Sherry Berry Studios for the main fabrics. And for the snowballs, I followed this tutorial from Cluck, Cluck Sew. It's a great ... View the Post
How to Keep New Years Resolutions (Not Just Make Them)
The last 3 years that I taught school I was a junior high, special education teacher where most of my classes were mild/moderate literacy courses. It was a great job that I loved. The 4 previous years were spent teaching art at a lock down school---another job that was AWESOME!!!! Each of these jobs taught me unique and important lessons---everything from the value of those crazy teenage souls to knowing how to "ghetto rig" an outfit. But today I want to share something simple, practical, and ... View the Post
Tales of High Fevers and Failed Plans
A week ago today I was curled up in a ball, running a fever, hallucinating and barely able to take care of myself let alone my family. I felt sad and overwhelmed. Starting at about 3:00am on Thanksgiving morning until now we have had at least one sick person at our house constantly. We've had everything from influenza to ear infections. And poor baby Ruth she had pneumonia and then got croup on top of that! I was freaking out. Literally this past month everything has taken a back seat to ... View the Post
Vintage Santa Napkin Holder Tutorial
While helping my mom put up her Christmas decorations a month or so ago, I came across these vintage Santa napkin holders that we used to use as kids. Only two of the many we had survived the years, but I thought that this year it would be fun to re-create them with the kids for our Christmas Eve dinner with my parents. If you want to make some too, here is what you will need: *White felt *Pink or skin-colored felt *Googly eyes (but I kind of prefer the tiny black poms like on the ... View the Post
