Photo by Ben Prepelka, sourceA few weeks ago we took our two girls on a road trip. It was an excursion that we had been planning for months and we were so excited. We planned out everything...the food, the clothes, the activities...and when the day came we were all set.The van was packed, the girls were loaded and we set off for an adventure...and adventure we found. We left before lunch and planned on reaching our destination before sundown but mother nature had other plans. As we approached ... View the Post
$5 Friday: A Mad for Plaid Skirt
Ok...let me explain.... Yes I made this skirt. Yes Grace is going to wear it. But no...I didn't "design" it. Here's the story: Over at Project Run and Play it's "Mad for Plaid" week and I wanted to sew along. You see, the thing is when Elizabeth and I come up with the themes for Project Run and Play we choose themes that we would want to sew along with and I really wanted to sew along with every single week this time...but then I had so much going on that I just wasn't able. And (for ... View the Post
Everyday I’m Shufflin: My first Burda Dress and the Shuffle Fabric Bundle Winner
Until this pattern I've never sewn anything for myself that wasn't from a vintage pattern or self drafted.... ...and I wasn't sure how it would go. For the Fabric Fest fashion show I really wanted to make one of my dresses from Riley Blake's Shuffle fabric. (It's one of my very favorite fabrics right now.) So I needed to find a dress that would showcase the fabric with a simple design. Then one night I was browsing through Burda's dress patterns and I came across this: Burda Pearl Dress ... The 90 Minute Dress Tutorial
I actually made this dress at the beginning of the summer (and have worn it everywhere!) but am just now getting to blog about it. A couple years ago I made the caftan dress, and this dress is just an updated version with a little more of a sleeve built into the pattern itself.....but just as easy! And when I say 90 minutes from start to finish.....I promise that it really will be around that amount of time (depending on how much the phone rings, or how many kid questions you have to ... The Art of Homemaking: At Our House You CAN Judge A book By It’s Cover
At our house you CAN judge a book by it's cover. Literally. My kids like to read. Especially Ruth. (Although in her case I should say, "My kids like to be read to.") And you can tell which books get the most use. The books that look the worst, the sorriest, the dirtiest, the most beat up are the most read and by far the most beloved of the bunch. All my life I knew when I "grew up" I would have a home full of books. And I knew I would have a great collection and have them all organized and ... View the Post
Fabric Fest Happenings (and a little something for you)….
A few weeks ago, liZ and I had the opportunity to attend Fabric Fest, a sewing conference that was put on by Riley Blake Designs in Las Vegas. It was a wonderful mid-week conference of sewing, food, and new friends and we really had the best time. We met people from all over the world (hello new Aussie friends!) and we laughed more than we have laughed in a long time. As part of Fabric Fest we taught a pattern-drafting class for drafting a children's bodice and then did a panel discussion ... View the Post
