Exactly 6 months ago we adopted Fred from a local animal shelter. He wasn't the dog we were looking for...but when I saw his mangy face looking out at me from a sea of yapping Chihuahuas I knew he was the dog for us. I originally wanted to get a dog to help my youngest who has a hard time communicating...but after living with Fred for awhile I realized it wasn't just our youngest who Fred helped...he helped my middle child who was feeling, well, like a middle child by giving her much ... The Art of Homemaking: On Spiders and an Update on My Web
At the beginning of last year I wrote a post about my word for 2015. The word I chose was: (A word which I still don't pronounce correctly.) Araneae is the scientific name for spiders and I chose it for a very specific reason...my goals for last year all revolved around the work of spiders...creating a a safe, beautiful, and practical home for me and mine...but I had no idea when I chose my word what the year would bring. ... 10 Ways to Make the Holiday Season Memorable (Without spending a lot of money)
I remember a Christmas many years ago when my oldest was four years old and our second was just barely one. I'd kind of gone all out that year and there were presents, presents and more presents for everyone in the family. I originally thought it was going to be the perfect Christmas. It took us all day to open gifts, we visited both families and by the time we got home that Christmas night I was sick---super sick. I didn't know it at the time but it was the start of a 3 week bout where each ... View the Post
To Be A Serene Woman (An Art of Homemaking Post)
Recently I have been anything but a "serene woman". I've always prided myself in my ability to multi-task. At any one time I have at least three different things going on. The washer is going, the dryer is going, the dishwasher is going and I'm folding laundry while listening to Grace read...or...I'm sewing up a quilt row, talking on the phone, and holding Ruth on my lap...or...I'm cooking dinner while cutting out a pattern on the kitchen counter, and texting...or...I'm talking to Simon ... The Art of Homemaking: To be thankful for dirty dishes….
The last couple of weeks I have been a grump about dishes. I felt like all I did was clean the kitchen. It seemed like it was the first thing I did in the morning and the last thing I did at night....wipe off counters and do the dishes. Only to wake up the next morning with bread bags open, peanut butter jars already out and open, knives full of peanut butter, and crumbs everywhere. The other day I had had it. I was seriously having a mommy hissy fit over yet-again wiping crumbs off the ... View the Post
The Things That Matter Most…(An Art of Homemaking Post)
Yesterday I shared a story over on our Facebook page about my melt down last week.... I had finally put out a rug that I had been saving since Christmas last year and in less than 24 hours my oldest child had spilled chocolate pudding all over it. Between the ruined new rug and everything else that had been going on and was coming up that week (a family funeral, viewing, luncheon, Halloween, making costumes, meetings, deadlines, obligations, etc.) it was more than I could handle and I turned ...
