Elizabeth and I both love vintage patterns. In fact, if we are using a pattern it is a rare occasion for us NOT to be using a vintage pattern. We just love them. Most of my early sewing was limited strictly to vintage patterns. I just think they are the best---the pieces, the instructions, the illustrations, the styles..... However, sometimes to see the potential waiting inside the envelope you have to look past the photo on the cover. Take this beauty for instance: That girl in the photo ... View the Post
A Blessing Dress.
My niece was blessed this last weekend, and unfortunately I couldn't be there. We had two other trips planned for February and we just couldn't swing another one in there, so I called my sister (my twin) and asked if I could make baby Sarah Jane's blessing dress. I was hoping it will help me feel like I was there in spirit.... So, at the beginning of last week I set out the make the dress. I was actually afraid to start the dress too early because I was worried it would be too small by the ... View the Post
The Love is in the Air Skirt (with Printable Template)
Every year I make Grace a skirt for Valentines Day. (Remember last year I made her the All You Need is Love Skirt and then later I made her the Love Me Two Times Skirt.) Well, this year I wanted to combine the felt from the first skirt with the cotton skirt of the second one and I came up with this: The Love is in the Air Skirt. It is a simple elastic waistband skirt made of cotton fabric with felt pieces that I held in place with fabric glue and then embroidered around with a running ... View the Post
Boys’ Week: A Shirt and a Lesson Learned.
For Boys' Week this week I was hoping to finish up the shirt that I was supposed to make Isaac for his Christmas outfit. The shirt pattern was cut out and ready to go. So, yesterday afternoon I sewed it up.....well, to this point. And then I decided to try it on.Guess what?It is ginormica. As in, huge. As in, it might fit my ten-year old. Okay the sleeves will probably be a bit short, but other than that it would totally fit him. And it was cut out in the size 3.Lesson learned. Next time ... View the Post
A Handmade Christmas: Visions of Sugar Plums
I promised you the holiday version of the Morton Salt Girl dress today and here it is. The only thing I did differently was to lengthen the skirt to make it knee-length and add a ribbon sash. Otherwise, it is the exact same dress.Purple was the requested color, so I obliged with a dark purple (plum) taffeta and a light purple satin for the lining and ribbon sash around the middle. And even more lucky for me, the day we did the photo shoot she had just returned from a day of "hair, make-up and ... View the Post
When it rains…..
I told you I was waiting to share Hannie's Halloween costume and I finally got the tutorial done for you today. Last year for Halloween she went as Audrey Hepburn, and this year she decided a long time ago that she wanted "to be someone old again." Which to her, meant different. She was adamant that she wanted to have a costume that no one else had. So, she and I brainstormed and this is what we came up with.... We took our inspiration from this image. A 60's mod dress with a ... View the Post
