Endurance Quilt Block Tutorial (Grounded Series)
Today I am excited to share the tutorial for how I made the “Endurance Quilt Block”…the very first tutorial in our “Grounded” Series.
If you need a reminder of the story and inspiration behind this block you can check out THIS POST….but…. if you don’t we are going to jump right in.

Now, admittedly there are 2 “blocks” featured on this amazing flooring. However, today I am sharing the tutorial for this one:

HOWEVER…..we do have a tutorial for the other block that can be found HERE if you like that one better.

Ok. Now that we’ve got that settled let’s get started!
First, here is a map of the quilt block we are making:

Next up materials….
Materials Required for ONE block:
Dark Brown: 4 squares cut at 4.5″ x 4.5″
Oatmeal: 4 squares cut at 4.5″ x 4.5″ and 4 squares cut at 3″ x 3″
Ivory: 1 square cut at 4.5″ x 4.5″, 4 squares cut at 3″ x 3″, 4 rectangles cut at 2.5″ x 4.5″, and 4 rectangles cut at 2.5″ x 6.5″
Directions:
*Note: Stitch all items right sides together with a 1/4″ seam allowance unless noted otherwise.
Step 1:
Using the 4 oatmeal squares cut at 3″ x 3″ and the 4 ivory squares cut at 3″ x 3″ create 8 half square triangles.
Square and trim each of these half square triangles to 2.5″ x 2.5″. Press.
Note: If you need a quick tutorial for making half square triangles just click HERE.
Step 2:
Pair up your half squares triangles.
Stitch each pair together as shown in the image below.

This will create 4 triangle pairs.
Step 3:
Using one of the newly stitched triangle pairs stitch one of your 2.5″ x 4.5″ ivory rectangles to each side so that you create a unit looking like this:

Repeat this process one more time so that you have two units that look like the wone shown above.
Step 4:
Repeat the same process completed in Step 3 but this time pair each of your triangles with the 2.5 x 6.5″ strips.
You now hove the outside framework completed for your block!
Step 5:
Lay out your 9 squares that each measure 4.5″ x 4.5″ as shown in the image below.

Step 6:
Stitch each of the blocks together along the top row.. Nest seams as desired. Repeat for the two remaining rows. Press.
Step 7:
Once each of your rows are stitched together, it is time to stitch the rows to one another to complete the middle of the endurance block. Stitch together. Press.
Step 8:
Stitch the two smaller (2.5″ x 12.5″) triangle centered strips to your block. (One along the top and one along the bottom….aligning the oatmeal colored triangles with the oatmeal colored squares.) As shown in the image below. Press.

Step 9:
Take your two remaining triangles strips and stitch them along each side of your block. (Remember to align the oatmeal colored triangles with the oatmeal colored blocks.) Press.

Step 10:
Top press and you are done!

These simple blocks have been a lot of fun for me to create.
I get up early Sunday mornings and sew alone in the quiet house. I love that time.
One of the the things I have been sewing up while everyone sleeps are some Endurance quilt blocks made from a fat quarter bundle I have been hanging onto for just the right project.

A fresh, spring Endurance block quilt after a LONG winter? Yes please!
I promise to share as soon as I finish her up.
Until then…lets continue to endure (lasting, continuing, remaining)…stitch by stitch.
