Top 10 Fun Family Card Games
UNO, Phase 10, and Apples to Apples are classic card games to be sure…but at our house we have a few other favorites…so today I put together a list of my family’s top 10 favorite card games.
*Note: My family consists of adult, teen, and tween age humans. 🙂
So…without further ado and, in no particular order, here are our current favorite card games:
I would say we play this game about once a week. The goal is to “build a stable” full of unicorns before someone else does. The cards are as adorable as they are funny. The game lets you sabotage others, skip turns, and collect a unicorn army. Plus, whoever is wearing the most colors gets to go first!
This game is perfect if you want to play something but don’t have much time. It is a quick play where you try to collect the most goods and property while others are trying to steal them from you. The rules are simple and the game is designed for anyone ages 7-99. Easy, fast, and fun!
This game stresses me out!!!! My teens love it though….and they love making me play because I am terrible at it. The game is fast paced and requires the players to lay down cards, say certain words, and at times do specific actions….and like I said….it stresses me out!!!!! If you are in the mood for a loud, hilarious time this is the card game for you.
Note: If you are already a Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza player the makers of that game now have a holiday version of the game called Santa Cookie Elf Candy Snowman that looks fun as well.
Choose a card, play it, pass your hand to the left. Choose a card, play it, pass your hand to the left. Repeat. That’s it. Oh, and in the process build the perfect combination platter.
*Note: We have Sushi Go Party which is the “deluxe” version that allows us to change up the cards for different platters. The simple version is just a deck of cards called Sushi Go.
We were just recently introduced to this game by my brother who ran across it at a gaming convention in Germany. I’m not sure I would have ever picked it up but this is one that is definitely a case of don’t judge a book by it’s cover.
In this game everyone is an art thief trying to steal the most paintings without getting caught. There are 4 rounds of play…and in our house each round goes faster and gets more intense as we each try to rack up the most points without getting caught.
The world is ending and you need to build and stabilize a gene pool through the ages (rounds) and as catastrophes continue to happen. This game has the most rules and is the most complicated on our list….but….it’s worth learning…especially if you have the most points at the end of the world!
Maybe I should start this explanation with a warning…this game has sparked debates in my family that have gone on for, well, forever….because we still bring up cards from this game!
In a Pickle is totally objective….you get cards and in Apple to Apple style choose which card is “larger” or “smaller” than another. It is as easy or as complicated as your players. Simple or dramatic…I always enjoy playing this game.
Counting and smashing cards….this is another loud, wild, hilarious game. Just remember to take off your rings and bracelets when you play….especially if you are as aggressive as we are when we play. The goal to Avocado Smash is to get rid of all of your cards but, if you smash the wrong cards you’ll end up with the whole pile!
We have been playing Exploding Kittens for years. The cards are quirky and funny. Winning the game is simple…don’t explode. Ok, it isn’t as simple as it sounds…your cards can be stolen, you can be sabotaged, and you can draw unhelpful cards. As the game proceeds the tension rises as “explosions” become more and more common.
*Note: If you are like us, there are some fun expansion packs to add to the regular cards. Our favorite is Zombie Kittens.
In this game you are an adorable little dinosaur who is trying to avoid the disasters (which just keep coming) and either get the most points or be the last dinosaur standing. The game is played in rounds and there is definitely strategy involved. This one takes a little longer than the other card games…about 45 minutes to play…but still a lot of fun.
******
We have several other card games that we are currently enjoying…and have several others ordered for the holidays so there may be a sequel to this post in the near future!
Happy gaming!
