How to Make a Windmill Quilt Block
Last month I had the amazing opportunity to spend some time visiting my brother who is living in Amsterdam.
And….since I would be visiting Amsterdam…and because it is so picturesque…I knew I would need to bring along some quilts and quilt blocks. So before I left I whipped up 4 new quilts and 5 new quilt blocks to bring with me across the pond.
Because so much time would be spent in the Netherlands I, of course, had to make some Windmill quilt blocks. I had intended to stitch up entire quilts but….ran out of time before I left.
However, you better believe I took some of those blocks from the unfinished quilts with me:
Soon I will be sharing the finished quilts with you….as well as the complete PDF patterns…but until then let’s do a quick Windmill Quilt Block Tutorial!
Materials:
Fabric A: 2, 5″ squares
Fabric B: 6, 5″ squares
Fabric C: 4, 5″ squares
Fabric D: 2, 5″ squares
Fabric E: 2, 5″ squares
Directions:
Step 1:
Make the Half-Square Triangle Blocks from the following fabric combinations:
(If you need a refresher course on making a Half-Square Triangle Block Tutorial…go HERE.)
8- HST blocks with Fabrics B and C
4- HST blocks with Fabrics D and E
4- HST blocks with A and B
Step 2:
Trim each of your half-square triangle blocks to 4.5″ or 4.5″
Step 3:
After your HST blocks are all done, lay your Windmill Quilt Block out using the block map shown above Step 1 in the directions.
Step 4:
Sew each of the blocks together in row #1. Nest seams is desired. Then repeat for each of the three remaining rows.
Step 5.
Once each of your rows are complete, sew the rows together to complete your windmill quilt block.

If you like making Half Square Triangles you will love making these Windmill quilt blocks….and I LOVE half square triangles so I have had the best time sewing up these blocks.
And I have to admit…I loved taking them with to Amsterdam…and seeing the windmills from which they were inspired.
This weekend I hope to get my, now finished, windmill quilts off to the quilter and share them with you soon. Meanwhile, have fun sewing up some Windmill Quilt Blocks of your own and keep your eyes peeled for some new tulip quilt patterns that I am OBSESSED with!!
Happy Quilting!
