After all the talk of our 2018 Quilt Block of the Month Club we are finally sharing the tutorial for the Union Square Quilt Block…which is the block we are focusing on this year.
Below is everything you need to know to create this block and sew along with us…and how to buy a printable, illustrated booklet for the sew along!
We are excited to have everyone sewing and long and are excited to see all the finished quilts.
Finished blocks are approximately 15″x15.”
Union Square Quilt
Fabric Requirements:
Fabric A- 3.5” by Width of Fabric (WoF) strip
Fabric B- 3.5” by WoF strip
Fabric C- 3.5” by WoF strip
Fabric D- 3” by WoF strip
Fabric E- 3.5” by WoF strip
Fabric F- 5.5” fabric square
CUT:
From Fabric A (yellow on diagram) cut: 4 squares 3.5” x3.5
From Fabric B (blue on diagram) cut: 8 squares 3.5” x 3.5”
From Fabric C (purple on diagram) cut: 4 squares 3.5” x 3.5”
From Fabric D (red on diagram) cut: 4 squares 3” x 3”
From Fabric E (white) cut: 4 squares 3”x 3’ and 8 squares 3.5” x 3.5”
From Fabric F (center square) cut: 1 square 5.5” x 5.5”
DIRECTIONS:
#1. Using 1 of your 3.5” squares from Fabric E and 1 of your 3.5” squares from Fabric A create 2 half square triangle blocks. Press and square them to a 3” x 3” size.

#2. Place one of your newly created half square triangle blocks on top of one of your 3” squares from Fabric E with right sides together and stitch together. Open and press.
#3. Place your other half square triangle block on top of one of your 3” squares from Fabric D with right sides together and stitch. Open and press.
#4. Place the two block unit you just created on top of your other two block unit with right sides together and stitch together. Open and Press.
#5. Repeat this same process 3 more times. This will create the 4 “4-Patch” block units needed to create the 4 corners of your Union Square Quilt Block.
#6. Take 1 of your 3.5” squares from Fabric B and 1 of your 3.5” squares from Fabric E and use them to create 2 half square triangle blocks. Press and square them to 3” x 3”.
#7. Place them on top of one another with right sides together and stitch together.
#8. Take 1 of your 3.5” squares from Fabric B and 1 of your 3.5” squares from Fabric C and use them to create 2 half square triangle blocks. Press and square them to 3” x 3”.
#9. Place them on top of one another with right sides together and stitch together.
#10. Take the these two new block units and place them on top of each other with right sides together and stitch together. Open and Press.
#11. Repeat this process 3 more times. This will create the 4 “4-Patch” block units needed to create the 4 sides of your Union Square Quilt Block.
#12. Using the 8 block units you just created as well as your 5.5” x 5.5” square from Fabric F use the illustration below to lay out your Union Square Quilt Block.
#13. Working in rows, starting at the top and working from left to right place your first 4 Patch block on top of your second 4 Patch block with right sides together and stitch. Open and Press.
#14. Place the third block in the row on top of the second block with right sides together and stitch. Open and Press.
#15. Repeat this process with the two remaining rows.
#16. Place row 1 on top of row two with right sides together and stitch. Open and Press.
#17. Place row three on top of row two with right sides together and stitch. Open and Press.
#18. Square your block.
