Today we have DIY Emoji shirts to share with you…although I have to admit I can’t take the credit for them…they are the brain child of my 9 year old who is IN LOVE with emojis.
She has emoji sheets and emoji pillowcases and stuffed emojis and emoji waterbottles and…you get the point. So when she realized that tomorrow was World Emoji Day she freaked out…and the idea for these shirts was born.
And actually, I have to hand it to her…the shirts, while not my favorite things…are kind of genius.
Her idea was to make shirts where you can change the emoji’s whenever you feel like it just by pulling the particular emoji off and replacing it with a new one.
At first I thought this sounded hard and suggested we just make emoji pins that she could wear but then she said “why don’t you just use velcro” and BAM! She had me convinced.
So, to make these shirts all you need is:
*a shirt
*felt
*velcro
*thread
*a sewing machine
Then all I did was draw the each emoji onto the felt and cut it, and sewed around the edges in matching thread. (Although, let’s be honest…you don’t really need to sew around the edges of each piece…these are emjoi shirts, not likely to become heirloom items…)
Once we had made the emojis finished it was time to add the Velcro.
We used self adhesive Velcro discs (scratchy side on the shirt, soft side on the emojis) and to reinforce them (so they don’t fall off during the changing of emojis or in the wash) we tacked them down with the sewing machine running an X across each disc.
And voila! The shirts were ready to be used!
Like I said…emojis aren’t really my thing…but my 9 year old and her little sister are, well, they are all heart eyes over them.

NOTE: If you want your felt emojis to be a little more durable I would suggest backing them with a heavy duty stabilizer (preferably an iron on)…This will help them keep their shape during all the emoji changing…we learned this from experience…
