Today I am sharing a project that I worked on last week that is a great scrap buster! We teamed up with Nancy’s Notions to do a challenge with their Dresden Template and I used lots of leftover fabrics from our Just Add Sugar Tour to create a Modern Dresden Mini Quilt that I am calling “With a Slice of Lemon.” I really do love projects I can make in an afternoon and this mini quilt is one of those!
Here is how you make one a modern dresden mini quilt…
Supplies
Dresden Template
Scraps of fabric (4-8 prints) that are at least 8 inches long
White Fabric
Scrap of backing, batting and extra binding fabric.
Directions
- Sew together 4-5 strips of scrap fabrics, making sure to begin and end with white fabric like shown below. (The edges do not have to be even, just long enough to fit the dresden template on them.) Press your seams to the darker fabrics.
- Place the Nancy’s Notions Dresden Template Ruler on top of your scrap patchwork quilt block and trim your dresdens to the size you are looking for. I did mine the 7″ size on the ruler. The template ruler has both lines for a square dresden and a rounded dresden so you have your choice of what kind you want to make (which is so nice!).
- Repeat until you have 6 dresdens that are the same size that look like this. To make a scrappier look, use different widths of strips on each of the patchwork blocks that you create in step #1.
- Stitch each of the 6 dresdens together to make a half circle.
- To finish the mini quilt, either applique the dresdens on top of the white fabric using your favorite method or (this is the one I used!) measure and cut curves to piece together your white fabric to complete the mini quilt. My finished quilt was 25″ by 25.”
- Baste and quilt the quilt as desired.
- Make your quilt binding and then bind your quilt.

Hi, I confused ( not surprising for me). The quilt reads to me that yellow is the fabric color at one end (making it look like the sun) and not white like your written instructions show. Can you show us a close up of the quilt? I love this mini and would love to make it! Thanks!
I just made a sample of one of the dresdens for the tutorial. Each actual dresden is different because I used scraps. Thanks for catching that so I can make it clearer in the directions!
