Snuggly flannel blankets are some of my favorite things to make. Mostly because they can be washed and used again and again and they just get softer and softer and also because they are a fast, simple project!
Today I will show you how to make a baby size blanket that measures 40 inches by 40 inches, but you really can make these in any size you would like!
10 Minute Flannel Blanket Tutorial
Materials:
*40 inches of white flannel fabric
*40 inches of cotton fabric
*Quilting Ruler
*Cutting Mat
*Rotary cutter
*Matching Thread
Step 1: Using your rotary cutter, cutting mat and quilting ruler cut two 40″ squares out of the flannel fabric and out of the quilting cotton.
Step 2: Place the two squares with right sides together and pin all the way around the perimeter of the blanket leaving a 2″ opening that will NOT be sewn.
Step 3: Stitch around the perimeter of the blanket, using a 5/8th inch seam allowance, leaving the 2″ opening unsewn to use later to turn and flip the blanket right sides out.
Step 4: Clip off a small triangle from each of the four corners to reduce bulk inside the blanket.
Step 5: After you have clipped all the corners, it is time to turn the blanket to the right sides out. Gently pull the right sides of the blanket through the 2″ opening, making sure the corners are pulled out. Then press the blanket flat making sure to press in the fabric from the 2″ opening. Then topstitch around the blanket. And you are done!
And now you have the perfect, snuggly baby blanket!
On my blanket I went back and stitched a few lines in between the arrows to give it a bit more texture but that is totally not necessary. Just a quick added touch 😉

I love this idea. I make them for my grandkids with flannel front and minky back. I also quilt a square about 18″ from the outer edges just to “hold it together” a little.

I just learned my good friend is pregnant and really want to make one of these for her!
Any advice on choosing flannel fabric? I’ve sewed with some that, instead of getting softer with each wash, pilled really bad and got rough. It was sad 🙁

Love this idea. Do you wash your fabric beforehand?

I can’t buy flannel online because of this…I like to go and feel it. I think the higher thread count flannels work best 😉

That’s a great idea!

I do to make sure the 40″ are the same size after shrinkage. The flannel and the cottons tend to shrink at different rates.

Hi I prewashed the cotton once but the flannel twice because it shrinks a lot. This piece of advice is from Laura from Sew Very Easy. Have a great day.
