This month we are excited to get started on our 2017 Series–The Modern Quilt Along! All this month we will be focusing on February’s theme of MODERN TRADITIONALISM with our co-host and master modern quilter, Amy Ellis from Amy’s Creative Side. If you missed January’s announcement and want to know more about the why’s and how we came up with this series, click HERE.
The term modern traditionalism was coined by the Modern Quilt Guild and they define it as, “the updating of classic quilt designs.” It’s basically taking the old and making it new again! I love that the movement of modern quilting uses traditional ways, there is something so comforting in that.
So the theme for this month is that we are taking the quilting traditions that we know, and then putting on a new spin on it– to create the new. In fact, both liZ and I love Modern Traditionalism so much that we wrote a whole book on it….The Simple Simon Guide to Patchwork Quilting. (affiliate link)
Let’s look at some examples from the book….
This quilt is comprised of the traditional Half-Square Triangle patchwork block, updated and put into a beautiful ribbon star quilt that is made with a modern color palette of greens, pinks and oranges. I think the half-square triangle has to be one of my very favorite quilt blocks and I love it in this pattern.
Then there’s this quilt that is a classic nine-patch quilt block made with a classic Irish Chain pattern, again modernized with the bolder colors and bolder patterns used. I do love this quilt.
So, this month we are looking at all things Traditional Made Modern and our co-host Amy Ellis is joining in the fun. Jump over to her site to see how she interprets the theme.
And then get your thinking cap on about how you will interpret the theme. Because we want to see it below in our link-up party! You can link up an older project that fits the theme or even work on something new! And there are some great prizes for one of you that links up!
Each month one lucky person who links up a quilting project will receive an awesome quilting package including a Fat Quarter bundle from Riley Blake Designs, a package of batting from Quilter’s Dream Batting, thread from Mettler Threads, and sewing notions from baby lock! Each package is worth over $100 and will make you a special quilt…..so get ready and link up!
*EDITED TO ADD* You may link up to three quilts either through a website or from Instagram for each monthly theme. Because the more the merrier!!! Please link directly to the quilts so we can all oohh and awe over your amazing work.

So is this QAL more about blog readers posting their quilts that fit the monthly theme versus quilting along with a suggested project?
Elizabeth says
Yes, the year long series will be us introducing a theme and then have everyone come up with a creative project that works with the theme. On both websites we have tried to give examples of what the theme would look like….but you can copy one of the examples given as well! We just want to focus on Modern quilting this year 😉

Awesome theme and idea! Where do we find the Link for the LinkUp Party? I can’t find it here?
Elizabeth says

This is so fun! I have spent the last several days making my three projects while thinking over what modern traditional means. I have been more of a traditional quilter for quite awhile, but I am also drawn to the modern aesthetic, and all the exploration of new ideass, methods, etc… It is an exciting time to be a quilter! Thanks for hosting this interesting, fresh quilt along.
