At the beginning of October I got the idea to make some modern mini quilts to hang up for decorations around the house. And then one day I stumbled upon some darling quilt blocks from a quilt block of the month club (I think it was in Arizona???) and knew they would be the cutest mini quilts. The original designs were paper pieced, but I decided to change them up to use bigger sized blocks and not paper piece them. So, I got out some graph paper and went to town sketching. I have spent the last hour looking for my original source…and I CAN NOT find them again. I knew I should have pinned them….but I thought I would for sure remember them. I am intent on adding a link to my original inspiration blocks, so if you have seen them—please let me know! I’d love to add a source to the creative person that came up with these! They were these four blocks…a black cat, a pumpkin, a trick or treat bag and a caramel apple.
I made each of the mini quilts the same size…and I think they would be darling all put together in a lap quilt as well. Each block finishes at 18″ by 20″ and I used Riley Blake Designs Confetti Solids for all the blocks, and then their .5″ stripe for all of the bindings and the black and white gingham for the backings (although I didn’t get a picture of any of the backings).
I am showing you how to make two of the mini quilts today–the black cat and the caramel apple and then tomorrow I will post the pumpkin mini quilt and the trick or treat bag.
Let’s first start with the Black Cat….
Black Cat Mini Quilt

(2) 18.5″ by 6.5″ rectangle
White Fabric:

(1) 7″ by 7″ square
(1) 20.5″ by 6.5″ rectangles
(1) 14.5″ by 6.5″ rectangle
(1) 2.5″ by 2.5″ square

- Make 2 HST from the (1) 3″ by 3″ squares in both black and white. Trim the HST’s to 2.5″ squares.
- Make 1 HST from the (1) 7″ by 7″ squares in black and white. Trim the HST to 6.5″ square.
- Take 1 of the 18.5″ by 6.5″ rectangles in black and 1 of the white 20.5″ by 6.5″ rectangles and place them together at a 90 degree angle as if you were making quilt binding. Here is what they should look like together. Stitch along red line and press seams to black fabric.
- Layout the rest of the quilt block as shown below.
- Stitch up the quilt block. Trim to 18.5″ by 20.5″ if needed.
- Baste, and quilt your quilt as desired. I did straight line quilting .5″ apart.
- Bind your mini quilt. HERE is a binding tutorial if you need one.

White Fabric:
(2) 6.5″ by 6.5″ squares
(2) 5.5″ by 5.5″ squares
(2) 8.5″ by 6.5″ rectangles

- Next, take your new green quilt square and place your two 5.5″ squares on the top left and top right corners. Draw a 45 degree line on each white square and stitch along your lines as shown below. Repeat for the 6.5″ squares in the bottom two corners. Trim off all excess white and green fabric to 1/4″ seam allowance and press white squares up like a snowball quilt block.
- To make the top block take your (2) white 8.5″ by 6.5″ rectangles and stitch the (1) 1.5″ by 6.5″ light brown rectangle in between using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press all seams toward the light brown fabric.
4. Layout your quilt block with the block you made in step #3 and the green quilt block you made in steps #1 and #2 and stitch together using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press seams toward the green quilt block.
5. Trim the mini quilt to 18.5″ by 20.5″ if needed.
6. Baste and quilt as desired. I used .5″ straight line quilting.
7. Bind quilt as desired. HERE is a great tutorial on binding if you need one.
