At the beginning of October I got the idea to make some modern mini quilts to hang up for decorations around the house. And then one day I stumbled upon some darling quilt blocks from a quilt block of the month club (I think it was in Arizona???) and knew they would be the cutest mini quilts. The original designs were paper pieced, but I decided to change them up to use bigger sized blocks and not paper piece them. So, I got out some graph paper and went to town sketching. I have spent the last hour looking for my original source…and I CAN NOT find them again. I knew I should have pinned them….but I thought I would for sure remember them. I am intent on adding a link to my original inspiration blocks, so if you have seen them—please let me know! I’d love to add a source to the creative person that came up with these! They were these four blocks…a black cat, a pumpkin, a trick or treat bag and a caramel apple.
I made each of the mini quilts the same size…and I think they would be darling all put together in a lap quilt as well. Each block finishes at 18″ by 20″ and I used Riley Blake Designs Confetti Solids for all the blocks, and then their .5″ stripe for all of the bindings and the black and white gingham for the backings (although I didn’t get a picture of any of the backings).
Yesterday I showed you the black cat and the caramel apple and today I am showing you how to make the other two of the mini quilts today–the pumpkin mini quilt and the trick or treat bag.
Halloween Mini Quilts–Pumpkin Mini Quilt
Finished Size 18″ by 20″
All seam allowances are 1/4″
Fabric Supplies:
Orange/ brown fabric scraps
1/4 yard of white fabric
1/2 yard backing fabric
1/4 yard of binding fabric (I used black and white stripes.)
Cut the following.
Orange Fabrics:
scraps big enough to fill a 18.5″ by 15.5″ square
Brown Fabric
(1) 1.5″ by 5.5″ rectangle
White Fabric:
(2) 8.5″ by 5.5″ rectangles
(1) 1.5″ by 5.5″ rectangle
(4) 4.5″ by 4.5″ squares
Directions:
- Take your orange fabrics and make an improvisational orange quilt block that measures 15.5″ by 18.5,” if you need help head to THIS tutorial. Be creative…and make it anyway you’d like!
2. To make the stem, take your white (1) 1.5″ by 5.5″ rectangle and your brown (1) 1.5″ by 5.5″ rectangle and lay them on a 90 degree angle and stitch on the red line like the illustration below. Trim off the excess brown and white (to the right of the line!), then press the brown fabric down to create the stem. Trim stem block back to a 1.5″ by 5.5″ rectangle if needed.
3. Next take your stem quilt block and add the (2) 8.5″ by 5.5″ pieces to the left and to the right of your stem piece. This will create the top third of your quilt block.
4. Take your improvisation orange block that you made in step one and add the (4) 4.5″ by 4.5″ squares to each of the four corners (make sure the 18.5″ is going left to right) and draw a line at a 45 degree angle on each corner like shown below. Stitch along each line, and then trim off the extra white and orange pieces. Press seams toward orange fabric.
5. Now stitch together your top stem piece to your bottom pumpkin piece using a 1/4″ seam allowance.
6. Baste and quilt as desired. I used straight line quilting .5″ apart.
7. Bind your quilt. HERE is a great binding tutorial if you need one.
