Today is the first Monday of September so we are working on our Quilt Block of the Month sampler! This month we are focusing on the Flying Geese block….and using up some of our scraps to make it.
Flying Geese Block
Materials:
7-scraps of leftover Quilt Block of the Month fabric
1/4 yard of white fabric
Cutting Instructions:
Cut 7 rectangles measuring 3″ by 5 1/2″ from various solid fabrics
Cut 14 squares measuring 3″ by 3″ from white fabric
Cut 1 panel 4 1/2″ by 16″
Cut 1 panel 7 1/2″ by 16″
Directions:
Step 1. Construct the seven flying geese blocks using the 3″ by 5 1/2″ rectangles and the 3″ white squares according to this Flying Geese Tutorial using 1/4″ seam allowances. Trim blocks to measure 2 1/2″ by 5″ flying geese blocks.
Step 2. Stitch all seven flying geese blocks into a long vertical row as shown below using 1/4″ seam allowances.
Step 3. To the left of the flying geese add the 4 1/2″ by 16″ panel by place flying geese strip with RST together and stitching using 1/4″ seam allowance.
Step 4. Add the 7 1/2″ by 16″ panel to the right of the flying geese strip by placing RST together and stitching using a 1/4″ seam allowance. The block should now look like the illustration below.
Step 5. Trim block to 16″ by 16″ if needed. You are now done with your Flying Geese Block!

Could you check the cutting vs the finish sizes before sewing. If I cut my 3 X 5.5 rectangles to 2.5 X 5 before sewing my geese strip is only 15 inches long after sewing. Am I doing something wrong
