Do you have lots of candy canes leftover from the holidays? They are usually swimming around at our house mostly because they are the last candy eaten—and I usually end up throwing them away after a month or so. But not this year! I decided to turn those leftover treats into a candy cane popcorn recipe that was perfect for family movie night which is a Friday night tradition at our house.
And boy howdy did those candy canes get gobbled up this year! I actually had to make a second batch because the first was gone within minutes. But seeing that you can make a batch in under fifteen minutes (just put the batch in the freezer to harden the chocolate) it was totally doable as a last-minute treat. And one of my favorites to eat as well!
These treats will also take you into the Valentine’s Day holiday with the perfect peppermint treat….
Candy Cane Popcorn Recipe:
10-12 cups of air popped popcorn (with a bit of butter and salt)
4-5 cubes of white melting chocolates (white chocolate bark)
2-3 candy canes crushed (crush in a zipper baggy with a rolling pin—my kids favorite part!)
Pop the popcorn according to the directions and put on a bit of butter and salt (about half the amount you would normally use) and spread popcorn out on wax paper to let cool. In the meantime, melt your chocolate cubes in the microwave in 30 second increments until all the white chocolate is melted. Times will depend on microwaves, but it is easy to burn chocolate because it does not appear to be melting until you stir it (ask me how I know ;). After the chocolate has completely melted drizzle it over the cooled popcorn. Immediately, sprinkle the crushed candy canes on top of the popcorn and let the chocolate cool. Store in an airtight container for up to one week.
