Last year I wrote a post called “20 Gifts that Cost Nothing To Make But Might Just Be Priceless”
And gift #6 on that list is what I called “The What Do You Know Notebook”. All it is is a simple spiral bound notebook filled with questions you would like the answers to.
I gave my grandpa one of these books (along with one of his favorite fountain pens). Some of the questions I hand wrote inside his book were: “Tell me about your first trip to Disneyland” “What was your worst job?” “Tell me about your favorite car” etc. etc. etc.
I wasn’t sure if he would answer the questions or not. But it was worth a try.
One day several months later I was visiting at their home when my Grandma told me that my Grandpa was finished with his book.
And he was!
The book was full.
I’ve read through it several times since then. Its such a sweet insight into the life of my grandpa. I knew the answers to many of the questions I asked…but now I have them written down in his words and his writing…along with his commentary that I LOVE.
I am so so so glad that I gave this book to my grandpa and I’m even happier that he answered my questions.
I feel like I now have this piece of my grandpa that I can keep with me forever.
Now….I just need to check up on my grandma and see how she is coming on her book!

PS: For the record I have given nearly every gift on that list over the past year or two…and the gifts on that last have always been the most memorable.

How sweet to have his words in his handwriting. Priceless. That is a true treasure. Thanks for sharing this list!

This is perfect! I was just thinking how I would love to know more about my aunt. She was in the Peace Corp when young and has traveled so much. She is so intelligent and funny. I adore her. My daughter did a project for her AP World History class on Teotihuacan culture. My aunt saw the photo I sent and said she had been there. That made me think about how I would love to learn more from her! We don’t live near each other and this would be a great way to learn more about her and my grandmother–her mother. Thank you!
