One of our last sewing projects for Teach the One this month at our house was some handmade beanbags. We got addicted one afternoon and the whole family was cranking out beanbags. We think they will be great for holiday gifts! We had one person cutting, kids taking turns sewing, and then the littlest and I were the rice-fillers…and it was a fun project.
Here is what you need if you want to make some too:
DIY Bean Bag Tutorial
*5.5 by 5.5 inch square pieces of fabric cut with pinking shears (so the edges do not fray)
*rice (or other filling for the beanbags)
And here are the three easy steps to making them:
Step 1: Cut 2 5.5 by 5.5 inch fabric squares with pinking shears. Using .5 inch seam allowance stitch around the perimeter of the bean bag leaving a .5 inch opening to fill it up.
Step 2: Fill bean bag with rice. (I live in a VERY dry climate so I don’t have to worry about anything molding here. If you have that worry, you can buy bean bag filling at most craft stores that are plastic and will not mold.)
Step 3: Stitch the .5 inch opening closed and you are done!
And you are done!

These work great as heating pads too. After only about 20 seconds in the microwave, they are nice and toasty.

Alana…that is a great idea, I hadn’t even thought of that!
