Sometimes I think when we finally finish paying off our student loan then…
Or when we can afford to buy some new furniture then….
Or when we have a bigger house then….
And so on and so forth. But the a few weeks ago something magical happened.
On the same day my husband and I, who have for years lived under the “if, then…” line of thinking had the same realization….we are in charge of our own lives and we don’t need to wait for a change that comes from outside to change what goes on inside our home.
So we stayed up late into the night talking about what our family really needs and how we can make changes to meet those needs right now…without waiting for a bigger house, a raise, or a winning lottery ticket!
And then we came up with a plan. A CRAZY plan but a plan non the less and we dove right in to making changes. Our plan was hair brained but we immediately put it into action and for several weeks now we have been working, working, working in our house….and while I am worn out…BEYOND worn out…I am full of hope…and I am happy that we didn’t just wait around and hope for a change, we’ve done something to make it happen.
Over the next month or two I will be sharing photos of what we’ve done. They won’t be picked up by any home decorating magazines but I’m telling you right now…I am pretty darn excited about what we’ve done. And I’m hoping that the projects and our plans start falling into place soon. Because not only am I tired (which I am) but my house…my poor house…looks like a factory, a storage unit, and a yard sale have all thrown a frat party that is spilling out my front door!
It’s been wild, time-consuming, and hard, and we still aren’t finished but what I’ve learned this summer is that we are in charge of our own situations and have the power to change them. There is always something that can be done to improve our situations if we only look hard enough and are willing to put in the effort. There is always something…and it’s up to us to find it.

Love the saying and the post. It sounds like you have been doing home improvements? I FIRMLY believe that you make the best of what you have. Specifically, I think that if you have a home, you make that home–the one you are fortunate enough to have–the best it can be! So, instead of getting the addition put on and being low on cash we invested in the home we have. Our outside needed help! We attacked it all. Please see what we did on my instagram site @maxandbarlow #makeitpretty is the idea. Take what you have, (be happy with what you have), and make it the best it can be! If I am off on what you are doing, sorry, but you may enjoy my #outdoorredo photos anyway! 🙂 I look so forward to what you are doing! Oh, and my husband and I retuned from MI wanting to go back “home” sooner than later. So we have put into motion a plan to do that! (those MI pics and why we love it on the insta account too.)

Such a good attitude! Whenever young students blame someone else for their behaviour, I find myself saying, “You make your own choices.” And it’s funny how that applies to adults too and sometimes when we complain about our situations, they actually are under our control. We make our own choices.
