Happy 4th of July weekend everyone!!! I love this time of year…with family, good food and good fun that always includes hot weather and fun fireworks. But we are spending our 4th of July morning a little bit differently this year. I talked about our plans for the summer to include a little more service back HERE and so we are using a couple of hours this morning in service to those brave men and women who have fought for our country. We are going to be working on a quilt block for a Quilt of Valor, that I will finish up the rest of the summer and we can donate as a family this fall.
liZ and I learned about Quilts of Valor earlier this summer from Marianne Fons and her presentation at Babylock Common Threads. She shared a video that went along with it, and it was so moving…I was tearing up throughout the whole thing. And as the pictures of veterans receiving quilts kept coming up on the screen…the one thing I noticed was the giant smiles on the faces of those receiving them. So, I came home and made everyone in the family watch the video and told them about how we could make a difference this summer, just by sewing up some quilt blocks.
I sewed up one block yesterday to show them what we are going to make….a Sawtooth Star Quilt where each star is 20″ by 20″ in reds and blues with a white background. Here it is…
And hopefully we can get one or two more blocks done this morning before our family barbeque. I will put up the full pattern for the quilt sometime in August if you want to sew a Sawtooth Star Quilt as well….but there are TONS of free patterns on the Quilt of Valor Website if you would like to make one too.
And here is the video that Marianne shared….it’s a good one, but grab a kleenex 😉
Have a wonderful holiday weekend everyone!
