This growing girlie was in desperate need of a new summer dress. Although her other dresses still fit on top, they were getting super shorty….so it was time to pick out some fabric for a new dress.
I let her loose in the fabric stash and she came back with this amazing stretch cotton sateen from Jo-Ann Fabrics that I bought last Spring for a dress for me (as you can see that didn’t happen). But I think it looks so cute and summery on her and to tell you the truth she will probably wear this dress more than I would have worn one anyway 😉
The summer floral dress is made up of the bodice from Basic Bodice Dress (that will be realeased in August). Although I changed up the neckline a little bit to make more of a boatneck feel. I think next time I would lower the front a bit, but that’s for the next dress.
The sleeves are short capped sleeves and then a full gathered skirt (it’s almost 90 inches gathered in there) for a cute tween dress. She already had the belt and shoes…but they were perfect for the dress so that’s all we accessorized with and she loves it.
Any summer florals on your sewing tables? There still is enough fabric leftover for a pencil skirt…and I think that is next for me 😉

After seeing what you did, I think I am inspired. My daughter is about your daughter’s age (11),and sewing stuff for her at this age is complicated ( her taste is so different). But that summer dress is lovely!

Love this! And yes, you must make a pencil skirt with this fabric! I love the floral. It reminds me of all the “watercolor” florals out now. Love the vibrancy. It is great to see this dress on your daughter because I know a similar one will work for my 15 yr. old. I just signed her up for a sewing class and they make a dress similar. Basic fitted bodice, sleeveless, and a few pleats and pockets. I thought it would be a great way for her to continue with what she learned in Sewing/Fashion class in 9th grade, but take it to the next level. Then she will be good to sew up a BUNCH of shift dresses which she loves!
