Hourglass Quilt With Scrappy Binding

For May our Quilt Block of the Month was an Hourglass Block.  (Here’s the link to the short video we made showing how to make an Hourglass Quilt Block.)  So before the month ended I wanted to show an entire quilt made from those blocks.

This is a quilt that I made a little while back for the daughter of one of my husband’s co-workers.  She is just a tiny thing going through some pretty serious rounds of chemo-therapy and I wanted her to have a quilt to take with her to the hospital.  So I picked out some fabric from my stash that I thought would be cheerful and comforting and got to work.

I just used a Moda Layer Cake (which is a stack of fabric pre-cut into 10 by 10 inch squares) and then cut my own white squares to that same size.  And because these blocks really are so simple to make I was able to sew up this small sized quilt in an afternoon.  Then, again because of the small size, I just spray basted the quilt top and backing to my batting and quilted it right on my Baby Lock sewing machine.

When I was finished I cut up the remaining squares and sewed them together to create a scrappy binding for the quilt.  (I love scrappy bindings….and use them a lot…and if you want to make some here is a link to our tutorial on how to make scrap bindings.  Well, actually it’s a link to how to make scrappy bias tape but the method is the same…but at the end just fold your scrappy strip in half and iron to make your binding, not the coo-coo-crazy way you fold and iron to make bias tape.  If that makes any sense…..)

It was two afternoons of sewing and an evening of binding well spent.  I feel so lucky to have had the time and resources to make something for someone else.
