My girls love flannel. A lot.
They have flannel blankets, flannel sheets, and flannel pajamas. In fact Ruth (my 3 year old) even has her own little trunk full of flannel…pink cuts of flannel fabric pieces.
And so I was thinking there has to be a way to let my girls wear the kind of fabric that they love….which is perfect to keep them toasty warm during the winter…but not have them look like they are wearing pajamas. So I tried a few things and I think I found my favorite way:
By pairing some soft flannels with crisp cottons I’ve been making these tunics that my girls love.
My favorite combinations are like the one here in the photographs….soft, solid colored flannels for the arms and body of the tunics which keeps the girls warm and cozy…and then a nice crisp peter pan collar made from fun patterned quilting cottons.
The girls like how comfortable these tops are with their leggings and I like how cute they are.
Plus they are really easy to make with this super simple closure in the back.
I foresee a lot more of these tops in my girls future.

I made my granddaughter a flannel jumper, lined with a woven cotton so it wouldn’t stick to her turtleneck or tights – it is soft and warm and she loves it! These tunics are darling and I’ll be watching for the pattern.

I made my daughter a flannel dress back at Christmas, thinking it would make a good nightgown. Except she likes wearing it as a dress, and it works very well. I’ve also used flannel a couple times as the accent fabric on a pants pattern for her–plaid flannel and corduroy look really cute together.

A lined flannel jumper sounds wonderful for little girls! What a terrific idea!

Ruth, my three year old, thinks a flannel night gown that Elizabeth made for her is a dress and also wears it as such…it’s ok as long as they are warm and dressed right? 🙂

REALLY CUTE!!
I am a huge fan of warm fabrics. I am constantly draped in fleece (all times of the year).
I so want to try this with flannel!

Long time reader, first time posting. My cherubs have had a love affair with flannel forever. I made flannel pants for the lads and smock top-style dresses for my girls until they were in the third grade. Now that they are “twenty-something” they fondly talk about how warm and cozy these dresses were. I liked a dress pattern that allowed me to adjust the hem length so the girls had a couple different looks (longer length worn with tights/leggings or shorter length worn with pants).

I love warm fabrics too. I am totally a creature of comfort!

Jane,
How wonderful that you sewed for your little ones? Did you or they keep any of their favorite items that you made them?
I also like patterns that can be versatile like that!
