I have been doing some Spring sewing lately and this is one skirt that I am glad to say that Hannie is excited about wearing. I found the amazing water-colored cotton sateen (I know you know but I am a BIG cotton sateen fan!) at Jo-Ann Fabrics and knew it would make an amazing Vintagely Modern Skirt. I have made one every single Spring because I love them so and you can see different fabrics here and here.
So another gathered skirt was in order this Spring but I changed the original tutorial up a bit so that you could add an invisible zipper and also make the inside of the skirt just as great as on the outside…hence a bit of a change with the way you put on the waistband.
You will cut out and gather the skirt exactly the same as in the first tutorial so go here for the original tutorial.
This time you are going to leave your skirt open on one side as well as your waistband. Stitch one end of the waistband (I love to add lightweight interfacing to that portion) to the skirt.
Then fold your waistband up and insert your invisible zipper according to the instructions on the zipper (and an invisible zipper foot is fantastic for this).
I like to use a pencil line to mark where the waistband hits on both sides of the zipper to line it up better. Less chances of a wonky zipper problem 😉
After you have sewn the zipper in, press under the top of the waistband 1/4 inch like shown in the picture below.
Then fold the other side of the waistband (right sides together) and stitch down to enclose your invisible zipper.
Now turn the whole waistband to the inside of the skirt and either topstitch on the right side of the skirt or you can handstitch the waistband on the inside. I chose to handstitch because I like a project while watching television at night but top stitching on the outside of the skirt works great too!
And you are done with your easy gathered skirt!

Forget the skirt! Where is that shirt from?
Elizabeth says
I am not finding it online, but in the stores I found it by the denims and the bottom weight fabrics…

It’s from DownEast girl clothing stores 😉

How many inches was it from waist to knee?

My granddaughter ordered a skirt like this for Easter however it is 5 inches too small in the waistband and she wants me to alter it. I was going to add a piece of material to the sides when I found out that it had pockets. Do you have any suggestS on how to alter it without completely removing the waistband?

Thanks so much for this tutorial! I made one from a lightweight white dotted Swiss, rose-printed fabric, so I lined it to give it some body, and for modesty’s sake. It’s so pretty, and went together so quickly, that I am heading to Joann in search of sateen. The waistband in the instructions isn’t as wide as the one pictured here, which I would have preferred, so I’ll adjust accordingly for the next skirt. Can’t wait to show it to my granddaughter!
