So, yes I realize it is December 3rd and that I am writing about Grace’s Halloween costume. I am doing it for two reasons. #1. I never shared it at Halloween time and #2. Because Grace thinks it is also going to be her Christmas dress.
(“But Mom it’s The Nightmare Before CHRISTMAS…BEFORE CHRISTMAS….see it’s for Halloween and Christmas!)
This dress was a lot of fun to make. I cut out the simple pattern pieces and drew on the front panel with a sharpie. Then I turned Grace loose with the paint….she chose the colors and painted in the entire front panel all by herself!
It took her hours but she stuck with it and was so proud of her work when she finished. After the paint dried I surged the pattern pieces together and had the dress waiting for her the next day when she came home from school.
After her initial excitement she gave the dress a closer inspection and declared, “Mom, that’s not how we sew!” when she noticed the surged sleeves and hem.
However, after she tried it on the surged edges didn’t seem to bother her anymore.
I love this little dress…and the little girl wearing it. However, this is not going to be her Christmas dress…
(But I do have an idea for another “inspired by” dress in mind for her that I think she will like just as much.)

OH MY GOODNESS I AM SHOUTING BECAUSE THIS IS AWESOME!
I vote for letting her wear it on Christmas. I mean, her logic is sound.
That is fantastic. I wish I had one for me!

Fabric paint and kids almost always turns out a winner and most definitely so in this case – love it!!! Being involved gives them ownership. I would never have thought of using a sharpie.
