First of all, a huge thank you to all who have been involved in Skirting the Issue this year. It has been even bigger and better than last year, and we know that is because of all of you who did guest posts, sewed skirts and just genuinely showed your love of sewing for others. REally and truly, from the bottom of our hearts…thank you!
We will be back to some regularly scheduled posts throughout the month of August, but you still do have time to sew up some skirts until August 15th.
And now onto my living room quandry….
Both liZ and I have set a goal to redo a few rooms in our houses in the next little while. She showed you a preview of her new bedroom here, and today I am showing you the first room that I want to start with—my living room.
It’s been a dilemma ever since we moved in and I know it’s the place to start but I am stuck for two reasons, mainly because it is fairly open and the colors that I choose in that room will probably have to be the same colors throughout the first floor. And the second reason that the room is still sitting empty is that I am so indecisive about everything….really, I can’t choose anything without stewing about it for weeks on end–it’s been hard to get the motivation to start.
So, here’s my plan, I am going to buy neutral for the big furniture and rug and then add in colors with curtains, knick knacks and pillows—things that I know that I can change out in a while.
And well, I am starting with the rug first. I love navy blue (anyone who’s been reading a while will know of my exclaimed love for navy blue) and am in love with this navy blue herringbone rug. I love that it is classic but still has some geometric print to it and the fact that I will always love navy. So then I want to add in yellows, greens, white and some raspberry tones to make it a formal but comfortable space. I pulled up a little sample collage that I made in Polyvore of what I am thinking…and the best news of the day is that there is a promo code for all rugs at Wayfair this week. Just use the code RUGLUV15 at checkout for 15% off….thank you Wayfair!!!
I will show you the progress I am making because I know there will be quite a few DIY projects along the way.
Do you think I am on the right track?
~Elizabeth

Elizabeth,
I’ve been working on my living room too. Adding architectural interest made the biggest difference so far! I designed and worked with a local contractor to add built-in bookcases and a windowseat in the middle. The unexpected part is that I bought the arched bookcases on Craigslist and then incorporated them into the design. I posted some pictures on my blog, http://sewmuchtogive.blogspot.com/2014/08/how-to-design-and-build-built-in.html, just for you ELizabeth. Come take a look, and leave a comment. Deborah Devine
