It is July 1st and one of our absolute favorite series has officially started….Skirting the Issue!
As sew-ers we know that a lot of what we sew we love to give away. We make quilts for graduations, clothes for our children and blankets and bibs and burp cloths for new babies. That’s what we do—we give away a piece of us when we sew.
And three years ago, we came up with an idea. What if we could ask women and mothers all over the world to sew up a skirt for another girl in need of some extra mother’s love? That simple question has turned into skirting the Issue—a month long series where we sew skirts for girls in Foster Care and donate them just in time for Back to School.
So, for the next month, you will see tutorials for skirts from some of our favorite people who have so graciously joined in the project. And we hope that you will join in too! All you have to do is sew a skirt and donate it to a local Foster Care Agency (or you can send it to us….). That’s it. And we will love you forever. We promise.
Starting tomorrow, we will open up a linky party on Project Sewn where you can add your skirts that you have made for the project. And there will be prizes along the way.
The Babylock family has so graciously donated The Elizabeth to one of you fantastic sewists who donates a skirt to the project. They feel as strongly about giving back to the community and we are so grateful to them. Thank you Babylock!!!!
And if you want to know more about the project…you can head HERE to see a video that a local group filmed about the project 2 years ago, but you can see how much we really do love this project. (Just please ignore my hair—-and realize that it was two years ago…)

I feel like I’ve been waiting forever for Skirting the Issue. Already have one done, a size 10 made out of really awesome vintage fabric I’ve had stashed. Many more on the way. 🙂

I hope you don’t mind but I was so excited about this that I blogged about it today too. I linked up to your blog and past projects/posts about this. Just want to help spread the word!

YEY!!! It’s my first year to join and I’m gladly going to pass on the word about it. It’s my first year hearing about it myself. What a great thing to do for young ladies, I do hope there is something that can be done for the young boys as well. If there is anything like that, I’d like to know about it…I <3 to sew, but I enjoy helping people even more…especially the younger people just learning about compassion and caring about others. Good luck to everyone participating, I'm happy to be a part of it. Making my phone calls today to see where to do my drop offs. I'm in Charleston, South Carolina 🙂

Will be joining in again this year. The work you girls do is wonderful!!! Thought you may be interested in a skirt pattern from Create HOPE Designs…

It’s only $5 and all proceeds go to help the charity, Little China Flower. It’s a great little pattern that I’ve used many times. Here’s a link to a review of the pattern…

I’m in NC and clicked on the link you gave in the comment above. If I may ask, who was the contact person? I would love to get involved with this. I meet with a group of moms who I am betting would love it too! What a great idea! Every girl needs a new skirt for back to school!

Nicole, We don’t yet have a contact person in NC in that office. If we get one, I will let you know 😉
