Today we get to share in a Birthday party with our friend Amber of Crazy Little Projects. You should see all the darling birthday ideas that are being shared…..be sure to head over there and pin some for your next party. And today I am sharing my Birthday cake quilt.
I am kind of obsessed with the idea of making a quilt to use for birthdays. Wouldn’t it be so fun to wake up on your birthday to a snuggly quilt? I think it would be so fun. So, I started with one block. And now I think I am going to take the scraps from every quilt I make this year and make a new “Birthday block.” I think it will be a fun addition to our family and a great way to use up scraps.
Back to the quilt block. I made this one from scraps from my Scrumptious quilt and all the strips are 2.5 inches wide and the lengths of each “cake layer” are shown below.
The candle is raw-edge-appliqued on top….
And finally I trimmed down the whole block to 9.5 inches square.
Done with the first block….now only about 16 or so left to do. You might be seeing it sometime next year 😉
Go take a look around over at Amber’s…and there are some fantastic giveaways going on with her Birthday Bash. Head over to see them!

Tina,
Now that is a spectacular idea! And I could probably finish it a lot sooner than a quilt! Thanks so much for sharing…really.

I think the birthday cake idea is precious and has so many possible uses. Would you please clarify a measurement for me. Are the printed parts of the layers the 5.5″, 7.5″, and 9.5″ plus the white ends or does the whole length measure 9.5. I’m asking because you said you trimmed it to measure a finished 9’5 inch square and I can’t seem to see it, since that would mean the printed part of the layer would be at the edge of the square. Would you please help me see it, I have probably read it wrong. Thanks so much..
