Here’s the story.
I made this dress awhile ago.
It’s Burda’s Pearl Dress pattern.
It was the first Burda pattern I’d ever sewn and I it made for practice before I put together my Shuffle Dress. Fortunately it worked out…and I can wear it. So I will. And because of the crazy print on the fabric it will work to be linked up to the Graphic Print challenge sew along that we have going on over at Project Sewn. So I will do that to.
The only problem is this:
this:
and of course, this:
Let’s look at the picture above for just a minute.
The cat on my foot, my crazy hands trying to grab the cardigan that is flapping in the breeze, the electrical outlet, the muddy pumpkin, and Ruth’s hand reaching in from the top corner…not so great…
UNLESS
Unless, you consider that Grace took the pictures.
My husband had taken Simon to his track meet, the sun was going down and my choice of photographers was narrowed down to Grace or Ruth. So Grace go the job.
We were only on the porch for about 5 minutes (I was FREAKING OUT that my neighbors would see me all dressed up with my 5 year old photographing me…they already think I’m crazy enough already without witnessing something like that!) And I swear to you out of the 74 pictures she took (she has a quick trigger finger) these are the best of the bunch.
Anyways…for what it’s worth I like this pattern. And it’s easy to make.
It’s just not so easy to photograph.
Which illustrates again why I’m much better behind the camera (or sewing machine or computer) than I am in front of it.
I’ll be back again on Friday…but I promise without any pictures of myself. Until then enjoy National Dictionary Day.

Love kids…this is one of my favorite posts I’ve read in a while. Thank you for bringing a smile to my face this morning!
Again –one of the reasons I enjoy your blog. Thanks for the early morning laugh. I was so tired I didn’t see a problem with the pictures–until your explanation of photo three. And I’m sure your neighbors love you! You’re not that crazy–are you? You look wonderful in the dress–from what I can see of it 🙂
Haha, I think I will come up with an excuse like this the next time I don’t want to put makeup on for a photo shoot ;-)) I see a tripod and remote in your near future….I bought the Amazon Basic products….$10 for the remote and $20 for the tripod….works like a charm.
Love the dress by the way!
yes, a tripod and remote. not that you will feel less funny about doing it, you can just hide in better spots. good thing my husbands family owns a lot of buildings just up the road. i can hide on their property while taking pics. love your stories and pics, so maybe i don’t want you to own a tripod:) oh and cute dress by the way!
This happens to me all the time! Except I ban my husband from taking photos of me. He has an uncanny ability to take photos that emphasize my hips and give me three chins. I take my chances with my daughter behind the camera.
Ha ha soo nicely funny.
Cute! I love the pictures! Definitely brought a smile to my face… plus I loce your outfit!
I love that Grace took the pictures. I have an entire album on facebook dedicated to randon pictures my daughter has taken. Just like her drawings, her perspective on the world is priceless. lol
this is awesome, Its like a glimpse into your real life. I love it!
thanks for the laugh 😉
i’m sure your daugther has a career in photography coming her way… Though she’ll probably be more on the artistic side…
Nicely done, Grace! The few times I’ve tried to resort to a child photographer, they came out unusably blurry, so this looks pretty good to me! And the print is perfect for the challenge 🙂
Never a dull moment at your house!! It was probably fun for Grace to be the photographer instead of the model!
You are so awesome. Seriously.
I think Grace did an awesome job. The pictures are very editorial. Love the dress too! 🙂
Haha, love this post. I echo the tripod + timer option. If you feel even more awkward taking photos of yourself than having your child take it, you could still have her push the button on the camera but at least you could make sure the framing is where you want it.
At least they are in focus! The dress is amazing, doesn’t matter how you pose in it. I really love the colors and print.
Hee Hee! Thanks for posting it anyhow. Love the “real life” posts – so everyone doesn’t think we are super moms! The print on the dress is amazing I really like the fabric – do you know where you got it? sherri@threadridinghood.com
Love the fun print and that Grace took these pictures!
Thank you for such a wonderful site. Love your style and sense of humor. I think Gracie did a great job this being her first time. I love the way all the girls dresses/skirt are simple and easy to make. Looking forward to your next creation.
haha, this whole scene made me laugh! Too funny! Honestly, for a 5 year old, it’s not too bad!
