Awhile back Mie asked if we would be interested in sewing along with her Sewing for Kindergarten series…and because Grace started kindergarten this year (and because I just love series like this) we, of course, said YES!
Now for some reason Grace is pretty much convinced that she has to wear a “school girl skirt” or a “school girl dress” to kindergarten everyday. So to make her happy we sewed her up another skirt to add to her collection.
It’s actually one that I planned for her Fall Look Book last year but ran out of time to make it. Luckily though, I kept all the supplies together which made this skirt a cinch.
Literally—-here’s how this skirt is made.
I measured Grace from her waist to her knee and added an inch and a half.
(That was how long I cut my fabric and because I left my fabric as wide as it comes on the bolt that is the only cut I had to make.)
Next I sewed it right sides together along the selvedge edge.
After that I turned the bottom edge (the hem) under twice and stitched so the bottom had a nice finished edge.
Then it was time to add the yarn.
I used some fat, thick, chunky yarn and sewed 3 rows of it to the bottom third of her skirt.
I didn’t pin or measure or anything. I just started sewing. Feeding the yarn along as I went.
(It’s not perfect. But it was easy and I like the texture and dimension it gives to the skirt.)
After I finished with the yarn I put in the casing for the elastic waistband, inserted the elastic and then was finished!
Like I said, a cinch!
I really do like the look of the yarn on the skirt and have another yarn and skirt project cut and ready to start…I think this is a theme I could really get wrapped up in!!!
Thanks Mie for inviting us to join in your series. We appreciate the invitation…it gave me a great excuse to make a skirt that has been waiting for me for over a year now.
For other kindergarten sewing ideas head on over and check out the series…it’s been a lot of fun!

I used the exact same yarn for this skirt as I did for Gracie’s Hostess cupcake skirt and it has gone through the wash a million times and has held up great. However, I only put it through the washing machine and don’t put it in the drier. (I just lay it out to dry.)
