Can I share a quick story for The Art of Homemaking today?
But lately, four out of five times when I have gone to get the broom it’s been in “his place.”
I have been busy with a HUGE project (we’ll share soon—I promise) and we are under a pretty tight deadline to get it done and so my sweeping has been well…..totally neglected.
It’s just reminded me lately that I am grateful for help in this journey of raising a family and homemaking….it’s a hard job, and I am so thankful for all the help I can get.

PS–How has your summer homemaking going? Have you let jobs slide like me? I’d love to know how you’ve been keeping up with kids and messes this summer. Me, I have been making everyone eat outside as much as possible….which my kids sometimes think is pure torture. I guess that’s what I am here for…..pure torture 😉

wow, i wish my hubby knew were i kept the broom! you lucky girl. since my hubby started his new business i have done everything around the house. not that he did much inside the house to begin with but he always helped with the outside and in the gardens…not this year. i’m not complaining just realizing how a little help goes a long ways. i actually have set out to get my kiddos to make their beds and clean their rooms all by themselves by the end of the summer. i help only on rare occasions. amazing how well they can do it at 3 and 4. they have almost gotten to the point where they don’t complain about doing it anymore…success! and what a huge help i tell ya! the problem we have mostly is our kitchen door opens right up to the backyard. they are always tracking in grass and veggies from the garden. i never know where i am going to find stray veggies!
i am really excited to hear about this big news of yours!!!

We foster pugs for a local rescue and more times then not, they’re not house trained when we get them. This leads to LOTS of mopping on my end. I can never remember where the mop is when I need it.
I haven’t dusted in maybe two weeks – it needs to be done twice a week in my house. :/ With my older two girls home during the day I try to take as much time as I can to hang out before they go back to school next week. I’m hoping I can make myself tidy-up a bit once school starts. 🙂

The second week of summer vacation my FB post read “Last week I was the lucky go happy mom. This week we clearly need to find the happy medium between happy go lucky and getting things done around the house, or I will lose it.” The third week of vacation the post was “Forget it! We are in survival mode at this house, until school starts. All visitors have been warned.” Survival mode for us is food (bought and prepared), clean clothes (just need to be clean, not put away), dishes will be washed as they are needed for use, and bathrooms will be spot cleaned as needed. I am both dreading and looking forward to the start of school, just for the routine again.

I got into “broom lore” this past Spring. I can’t help myself now. I always have to store mine with the bristles facing up (for good luck), and never sweep on the beginning of a new week or the ending of an old week (bad luck).
LOL
I have no idea where people came up with this stuff, but it is amusing.
PS- My kids also think eating outside is torture! What is with that? Ha!

Thank you for writing this. It hit home with me and taught me a little lesson in appreciation. I’ve been working part time and have been coming home to find things in the “wrong places”. It drives me nuts! I openly complain about it. I wish I would have stopped to consider that things were in different places because somebody was trying to be helpful. I suppose my perspective needed some adjusting and I’m happy that your post has helped me do just that.

I often get asked how I manage to sew, craft, cook, make jam and do all sorts of fun thing things with my daughter AND run my own business. My answer? “Have you seen my house? No, no you haven’t because I am too ashamed to let you come over.”
Fortunately my husband is a fantastic help when the mess begins to interfere with the creative process. I sort and he puts away. I wash and he dries. I wash and he folds. I stress out and he makes me a cuppa. He’s also pretty fantastic about living in the middle of a creative war zone and his wife’s nutball priorities. I know how lucky I am to have him.
