How is summer break going for you? The first week at our house was filled with sickies but I have two fingers crossed that we are out of the worst of it and on to summer break! (And guess who was the lucky member of the family to get it twice…..um…yeah….me.)
I actually made this dress a couple of weeks ago but am finally now posting about it. It is a simple vintage-esque dress with a full gathered skirt and cap sleeves.
I pulled the pattern of a body draft I had done a month or so ago, but any plain bodice and sleeve pattern would work. I did want a hint of detail so I made super-big piping using cording for pillows and made my own bias tape. I think it looks cute….and totally maybe using bigger piping in more apparel sewing.
Any fun summer sewing going on?
At our house today we have a family-wide service project going on….that I will tell you about soon.

So pretty! I love it! Glad you’re feeling better! I have also been the “fortunate” one in the house who has been sick twice in the past 3 weeks. Ugh! As far as fun summer sewing going on, I have 14 ruffle bum sunsuits to make (no lie…12 for customers and of course my girls each need one too :)) so I’d better get motivated!

This is fantastic! I wondered how big that piping was. Cool idea. It is nice to see this style on an older girl too. My girls are six and very tall, I’m having to re-think my aesthetic for them as to not look too juvenile. Awesome job!

Love that big, full skirt! She looks so sweet, and I just love the movement a skirt like that brings. Those sleeves have a certain sweetness, too. And, I never would have guessed it was jumbo piping. Now that I’ve seen it, I can’t picture it any other way! I do love piping, so jumbo piping seems like the next appropriate step. Ha!

What a beautiful model. Love the dress and especially the fabric. I just watched a video on making piping and this certainly inspires me to try it on this dress for my 10 year old granddaughter. I find the dress in stores are too old for her and this looks so age appropriate. Thank you

I’m going to go out on a limb here and be “that” comment person who is asking for the pattern. I know, I know, you drafted it yourself and any plain bodice pattern will work but I have been searching far and wide for just that perfect simple pattern! My girls are tall and slim and therefore rather difficult to fit. If I can just find a good basic pattern I think I can take off from there. Can you recommend anything?

Let me see what I can do KAte….what sizes (or measurements) do you need?
Kate says
My girls are 5 and 8 but the 8 year old usually has a chest size of 7. She likes long dresses but length is pretty easy to adjust. Thanks!

I would like it as well, I was just wondering what the reply was. I have 7 girls aged 18 – 2. I would love this style as well, it is very classic. I also have 6 boys, but they won’t look good in this 🙂 Maybe a matching tie/bowtie
Thank you,
Monique
