A Five Minute Pillowcase How To and A Riley Blake Fabric Giveaway!

Ok…maybe it’s a 15 or 20 minute pillowcase if you count the time it takes to cut it out. But I swear it’s crazy easy and in honor of the first annual National Serger Month I used a serger to make it.  (I actually don’t have a serger of my own but I borrowed my moms for this project and it was AWESOME!!!  Now I need to start saving up for one of my own!)
***NOTE***Since publishing this post I now have a baby lock Evolution serger of my own…it is AMAZING…and I have used it to put together approximately 8.5 million of the following pillow cases with it!

Alright, now let’s make a pillowcase!

Step #1.  Cut two pieces of fabric 20 and 1/2 inches by 26 and 1/2 inches.  Then cut two pieces of fabric 10 inches by 20 and 1/2 inches.

  Step #2.  Fold each of your smaller pieces in half (hot dog style) with the wrong sides together and iron.
(Now this piece will be 5 inches tall and 20 and 1/2 inches long.)
 Step #3.  Next place the raw edge of one of your folded pieces along the raw edge of one of your large pieces and serge them together. (Now repeat this process with the your other two remaining pieces.)
  Step #4.  Now fold back the short pieces you just serged and iron.
Step #5.  Next place both of your serged rectangles on top of each other with right sides together (like in the photo below).
Step #6.  Serge the right sides together, serge the left sides together, and then serge along the back end.

 And your done—it’s like the easiest project EVER!
Especially if you’ve got a serger!
(And if you are like me and don’t have a serger I’ll be posting very soon another way to make an easy pillowcase using your sewing machine and that hides your raw edges.)

*SIDE NOTE:  The quilt we are sharing today was so much fun to make…and we learned a lot doing it…for example someone…who will remain anonymous but that we appreciate very much…let us try our hand at long arm quilting.
That was AWESOME!!!  Sure, we aren’t long arm professionals but it is something that I would definitely like to try again and again and again.
Below is a photo of our funny quilting work…it’s ca-razy but sure was fun.  I can’t wait to give it another try!

PS—Before any of you email me I KNOW that the photo underneath step 5 in the tutorial above was sewn and not serged.  I cut the pillowcases out and started taking the photos before I remembered that I had borrowed the serger and I didn’t retake the photos after I started serging them.
Ok.  I feel better after confessing that.  Whew!

    What I love is that even though it’s completely brand new it LOOKS like one of the vintage pillowcases I’m always snatching up at the thrift store to make into pillowcase dresses.

    I bought my brother in laws used serger last summer. I took me until Christmas to get brave enough to try it out. Now I’m addict.

    My favorite movie is Ghandi (I’m a nerd.) But that makes for a TERRIBLE movie night. Long historical drama that ends with the main character dying and Mommy weeping? Bad. My favorite movie to watch as a family? Despicable Me. Hilarious, sweet, darkly funny and who knew Julie Anrews could be so evil. Plus the Minions remind me of my brothers and sister growing up…and now.

    well, i guess i better learn how to FINALLY use mine! i have tried and tried but i think i finally need to give it up and take the free class. i have to admit defeat on this one:) i am in love with that quilt! the crazy stitching is what i love best:)

    A favorite movie right now for the adults at our house is Pitch Perfect. So many one liners! For the family I love Despicable Me, and the kids are loving Brave. I like it too so that is good. Thanks for sharing!

    Favorite movie – Merrily We Live (1938) Dizzy society matron Emily Kilbourne has a habit of hiring ex-cons and hobos as servants. Her latest find is a handsome “tramp” who shows up at her doorstep and soon ends up in a chauffeur’s uniform. He also catches the eye of her pretty Geraldine. It is a wonderful black and white with more silliness than can be imagined.

    Another favorite is “The Devil and Daniel Webster” (1941) Stupendous acting – truly a timeless film. A 19th Century New Hampshire farmer who makes a compact with the Devil for economic success enlists Daniel Webster to extract him from his contract.

    I guess this isn’t a short answer, but two long forgotten movies worth watching.

    My favourite films would have to be Harry potter 1-7 & ALL of the Twilight Sager 1-5, We often have family days where we watch one or the other all snuggled up on the sofa together with a bowl of popcorn so a nice handmade quilt would go down well.

And my new favorite is Lincoln. Have you seen that? I cried with excitement during the voting scene. Who knew voting could bring me to tears?     Oh goodness, to choose just one movie is nearly impossible~I love them each for what mood they put me in. But I suppose if I had to pick one it would have to be the Ocean movies (11, 12, 13).

    So, I can’t think of what my favorite movie of all time is, but the movie I’ve enjoyed most lately is “Pitch Perfect”- I guess I just love all the singing and dancing. That being said, I’ve never watched “Glee”…

    It is hard to pick an all time favorite because I watch a lot of movies. I own almost 200 DVDs. My favorites depend on how I feel. When I am sick, I watch Pretty Woman, An American President, and Air Force One. If I am bored I always watch the Jaressic Park movies and the Die Hard movies. If I am sewing late into the night then it is all of the Halloween movies. I also have Netflix so I have basically unlimited movies to pick from. The one I watch the most and have had to replace twice due to wear is Pat it Forward. An awesome movie and I cry every single time I watch it.

    One of my favorite movies is still the Wizard of Oz…I can’t wait to watch it with my daughter when she is a little older! (She is not yet two…I think the flying monkeys are a bit much for her yet).

    My all time favorite movie is “Gone with the Wind”. I read the book when I was in Jr. High School and the movie was re-released my senior year in high school. My mother and I used to watch it every Mother’s Day.

    Thank you for the great sewing tutorials. I have just read a few and are going to try the caftan (or 2 or 3) and th pillowcases. My favorite movie of all times is Angels With Dirty Faces (a real oldie) and City of Angels.

    I love making these quick pillow pillowcases. They are my go to gifts for children in holiday or character fabrics. Also great shower gifts. Fun to see so many of my favorite movies already listed. I will add Fletch and Charade.
