(I found this handmade clown costume at a garage sale this summer and fell in love. The yellow is polyester awesomeness, and someone took a lot of time to make it. I can’t wait until next year for the youngest to wear it…..)
Recently, we were having a discussion about Halloween costumes of years past recently. As in, what costumes we were when we were little. We came up with a hobos, scarecrows, ghosts with good ‘ole sheets thrown over our heads, a bag of jellybeans (garbage bag with balloons) one year and a few other great ones.
But none of my kids can decide what they want to be this year. It is changing everyday…and I really want to start on costumes, but I can’t.
It’s driving me nuts.
What are your kids being? (Maybe it’ll spark some ideas….)

My little one, in full 3 year old girl glory, has asked to be a “pink, pink, pink princess “. So, I’m making her the poofiest, pinkest dress I’ve ever made, complete with glitter tulle.

My little who is 18 months is going to be a vintage nurse. I made her a little white dress, a navy blue circle cape and a little cap. It will be adorable with white tights and shoes but only if she’ll actually put it on.

My most creative year I made my daughter (then 6) a leopard from a pattern. I hate using patterns but did it. Her sister (then 3) was my favorite costume ever made. Her sister had worn it years prior. I used felt, big rick rack (some in obnoxious rainbow pattern),red yarn, big buttons, and a glue gun. I made a felt hat with a big flower and red yarn hair glued inside. The vest had armholes cut in and where I needed to bring in the neck–more hot glue–and I covered it with a lapel covered in rick rack. And big buttons glued down the front. Paired with a bright colored legging outfit from Carters and face paint–good to go! The pictures are great!!!! I whipped that baby up and it was great!

My 5 year old daughter decided to be a crow the day after Halloween last year and has stuck with it. My son recently decided to be a racoon. So far we have masks and a racoon tail. I need to finish the crow wings and make my husband and I some masks.

This year I am making a Laura Ingalls costume. Last year she was an angel, I found an old wedding dress at Salvation Army and chopped it up. BEAUTIFUL. The year before fairy princess. She’s also been a vampire, witch, pink poodle, candy corn and peas in a pod. My step daughter was a pumpkin & lady bug. The lady bug was the easiest costume ever though, it was a circle cape made from felt using fabric glue.
Good luck!

I love that little clown costume. How fun! My sixteen month old is going to be a peacock thanks to inspiration from Shwin & Shwin. I really need to get started on it!

We are all dinosaurs this year because my 3.5 year old had the loudest voice about what costumes to be worn. I bought a ton of felt and we are all modeled after the dinosaurs from PBS Dinosaur Train. I think the end product is very cute, especially my little toddler in his dino tail and “roaring” at everyone (he whispers his roars!).

The youngest is an Baby owl. (I finished her costume early) Her older sister is gung-ho about being a bat. My sister-in-law picked up her light-up costume last year after Halloween for 90% off. But for Preschool, she has to be a recognizable storybook character. (I tried to tell her that she could be Stellaluna, but we’ve never read that book, so it didn’t work.) Instead, she’s going to be Rapunzel, using the costume I made her for her birthday. I attempted the hair this week, but it was a total craft fail. So instead, I bought the Disney version on sale and she’ll wear that.

I made Ansley a Spanish carnival dress (it’s kind of like a flamenco dress) and she calls it her dancing dress. I made my nephew a fox hat and matching orange jacket. Last year Ansley was Little Red Riding Hood. 🙂 Good luck getting them to commit to an idea.

My youngest is going as “Lacey” from Barbie’s 12 dancing princesses (I KNOW), and my oldest is going as little red riding hood!
Good luck!

I wil have 1 ghost (I’m going to use muslin), 1 (18 month old girl) punk rocker, and my oldest (5) decided to be a “Super Ballerina.” She designed the costume complete with crown, wand and power bracelets (that have power buttons) to go with her pink leotard and pink, green and turquoise tutu.

I’ve got my 9 year old as Captain America… and my daughter (age 7) will be Olivia the Pig. I’ve got the Captain America costume all pulled together, but the Olivia costume I’m still cutting out.

for MONTHS my 5 year old was set on BatGirl, which I was thrilled about because it would be easy (Hello, Tinkerbell pattern made in black) and my son was going to be every super hero he could think of. Then the Party City costume catalog came (CURSE YOU PARTY CITY!!!). My 5 year old is now going to be a unicorn, which I’m making up as I go, and my son is going to be Billy Blazes (the fire chief Rescue Hero). I’m taking the easy out on the baby… ready-made purple monster costume that her sister wore 4 years ago. 🙂

Let me see I have a Cleopatra, Bat Girl & my youngest wants to be a hot dog to match my dog’s hotdog costume.
And I love that print on the clown costume, my toybox when I was little in the 70’s was covered in vinyl with that print.
