A couple of months ago, we were contacted about a new sewing book that was coming out and if we would like a preview copy. The book was so intriguing that we just had to say yes! The premise is so creative and it turned out to be such a fun little project.
The book Sew Iconic by Liz Gregory is a book of sewing patterns based on 10 classic Hollywood film dresses. And you all know by now that we both love a good theme, so we were totally on board with recreating a classic movie dress.
There were so many fun choices; a dress from Titanic, Pretty Woman, Breakfast at Tiffanys’ and a ton of others from movies that you all know and love. But the decision finally was the pink Mambo dress from Dirty Dancing as the dress to make.
A classic style updated with a modern twist. A fun circle skirt, with an optional overlay and a fun fitted bodice to finish the dress.
We did the dress in a light pink Kona cotton (perfect for summer) and used a fun hot pink zipper in the back and a hot pink belt for added details.
The dress came together quickly and was a fun project.
And something else for you lovely readers…..Sew Iconic is giving away one book to one of you!
Just leave a comment about a Tinsel Town dress you ‘d like to recreate and you are entered!
Good luck everyone!

I’d love to recreate the homecoming dress Sandy wears in Grease. 🙂
There are so many I’d like to make, but right now, I’d choose one of Maria’s dresses from West Side Story.
If my Tinsel Town dress you mean anything that a hollywood star has worn, Michelle Williams had a beautiful red lace dress. Stunning.
That is beautiful – I love it!!
I would love to recreate the brown polka polka dot dress Julia Roberts wore in Pretty Woman.
I just love the LBD Audrey Hepburn wore in Breakfast at Tiffany’s! I would love to make / recreate one.
I kinda love the mambo dress 🙂
I love those hot pink details! I would want to recreate something from Legally Blonde.
Wow, that is amazing! I hope you carried a watermelon up some stairs with that… 🙂
I always wanted to dress like Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Not sure if I could pull it off, but it’d be fun to try!
The iconic dress from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. What a cool book! Would love to see what else is in there!
Love this mambo dress- reminds me of all the fifties dresses I love. I’d love to make Doris day’s white fitted dress in pillow talk, or Maria’s dress in west side story. This book is grey- favorite old movies, sewing, vintage styles. Life doesn’t get better than this!
What a darling dress!! I like the mambo dress!
I was just going to say that this dress reminded me of the dress in Dirty Dancing.
Oh, the Pretty woman dress would be awesome to recreate 🙂
How pretty! I’m still waiting for the day you don’t cut your head off in the picture 🙂 I think I’d do the red dress Hepburn wears on the poster of Roman Holiday. Love the tie shoulders on that one.
I think that the Pink Mambo would be my favorite. I love the hot pink details.
Love the pink zipper on the Mambo. I’d make Mia Farrow’s Mod-style dress with the big collar in Rosemary’s Baby.
I would probably have to go with one of Elizabeth Bennett’s dresses from Pride & Prejudice (1995). Either her white sheer gown with green underdress or her reddish/coral gown. (With a higher neckline though.) Or Mary Poppins white frock with red trimming when she pops into the chalk drawing. So fun! 🙂
I love the brown polka dotted dress from Pretty Woman. Would love that one!
One day I’ll make a replica dress of the beautiful Hubert de Givenchy designed gown Audrey Hepburn wears in Sabrina – then I will wear it at a gala or great ball and die happily I think 😉
breakfast at tiffany’s dress!
I would definitely make the mambo dress, perfect for work. I also love Audrey Hepburn’s dress in Roman Holiday. It would be great to see the other dresses in this book!
I’ve alway adore Jennifer Grey’s mambo dress in Dirty Dancing and would love to make myself one someday.
Anything from My Fair Lady, though I have no idea where I’d actually wear it! 🙂
I have always loved the dress from dirty dancing!! I would make that one.
the Audrey Hepburn dress 🙂
would love to see all the dresses in this book !
A little bit crazy but I´d love Mary Poppins white and red outfit!
Thanks
María
It’s probably way fancier than anything I would actually ever make, but there was a yellow dress in Sweet Home Alabama worn by Reese Witherspoon that I completely fell in love with; that would be my choice.
Ahhh…I just introduced the daughters to Dirty Dancing last weekend! I LOVE the dress! The hot pink zipper & belt were a perfect touch too. I think I’d like to take a swing at that Marilyn Monroe classic on the cover. How fun is that dress?
A Breakfast at Tiffany’s dress would be just divine!
Hooray for sewing for yourself!!!! Looks great!! I’d love one of the dresses from The Help!
Oh, the dress that Hermione wears to the Christmas ball is just beautiful. And those earrings. I have no where to wear a dress like that. But I’ll take the earrings!
I really love the hot pink zipper on your dress. It’s such a great detail!
Audrey Hepburn – Breakfast at Tiffanys. So beautiful

What a fun book! “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is what I would like to recreate. So classic!
I would definitely have to start with the Breakfast at Tiffany’s little black dress. What a great idea for a book and thanks for the chance to win!
I love, love, love the pink zipper.
I’m not sure which dress I would want to recreate solely based on the movie it came from, however, I would like to get into sewing, so, I’d like to create whichever one would look most flattering on me!
I would love to give that Marilyn dress a shot. 🙂 And I’m curious about the Titanic dress…I’ve always wanted to have a huge, full, 1800s style gown for Halloween or something. What a GREAT idea for this book! kandie_mcd(at)yahoo(dot)com
WOW what an awesome idea for a book! I would absolutely love the chance to win one& finally make a garment for myself rather than for my children. Thanks a ton ladies& the dress is gorgeous! That hot pink zipper is super fun!
Hands down Audrey Hepburn’s little black dress from Breakfast at Tiffany’s! This book looks like so much fun!!

My favorite dress ever is Katharine Hepburn’s wedding dress in The Philadelphia Story.
But… for this book, I love that you made the Dirty Dancing dress and would love to make one for my daughter!
this list from comments are so fun! I love the maria from wss idea. I was thinking the dress sarah brown wears to cuba in guys and dolls or something from white christmas. The pride and prejudice idea is great too.
Anything Audrey Hepburn wore is gorgeous. I’m a newbie at sewing, and I’d love to cut my teeth on this book. 🙂
Hands down I want a Marilyn!
Any dress from the 30’s or 40’s…what kind of fabric did they use that flowed so well when they danced?
Oh my gosh, awesome book! Once you showed the Dirty Dancing dress I was sold! I’d make that one!
There are so many gorgeous dresses I’d love to recreate, it would be impossible to pick!
I can’t think of a particular dress, but I can’t wait to see this book!
How about any of the dresses amy adams wore in the muppets?
I want them all!
Anything with a fitted bodice and full skirt! Think 50’s.
My favorite is the dress with the black overlay and all the beading that Kate Winslet wears in Titanic when she falls while trying to jump and Leo saves her. What a fun book! 🙂
I LOVE Faye Dunaway’s clothes in “Bonnie and Clyde” and in “Chinatown.”
Amy Adams wore this teal dress with a bright purple belt in Muppets, and I know it’s super simple, but I really love it.

Hmm…tough call on what iconic dress I would want to recreate. I would have to say one of the circle skirt dresses from Grease. Oooh to dance and twirl. How crazy fun! What a great idea for a book too. I would love to win! 😉
I love this idea! Thanks for the chance. I would love to sew dresses like those in How to Marry a Millionaire. So classic.

Mambo Dress!!!!!!
I would love to recreate the beautiful wedding dress that Audrey Hepburn wore in Funny Face! Thank you for your great blog! It inspires me all the time!
I see I’m not the first to say it, but anything Amy Adams wore in The Muppets! I also love the dress she supposedly made out of the curtains in Enchanted.
While it IDs 100% impractical I have always wanted to recreate the dress that Scarlett made out of the green curtains and wore to visit Rhett in Gone with the Wind!
With no doubt, the classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s dress. It’s so effortlessly chic, and will never, ever, not be in style.
I love the black and white dress that Grace Kelly wears in Rear Window!
the green dress Kiera Knightly wears in Atonement – pure elegance!!!
What a great idea for a book, thanks for the chance to win a copy 🙂
oh I LOVE that Mambo dress! That would be so fun to wear and I love the hot pink details – awesome job, ladies!
Although I’m sure it’s not featured in this book, Molly Ringwald’s self designed dress in Pretty in Pink would be my choice. One of my inspirations to teach myself the art of sewing.
i would love the pink mambo dress. i had one when i was young in orchid, my mom made mine. i want to make one for my daughter, she loves things i use to wear. i would really like to have the book. i could make even more things like i use to have. that would be loads of fun. thanks for this chance!!!!!!!!!!!

Debra Kerr’s chiffon dinner gown in “An Affair To Remember “! I would love to know who the designer was for that movie. The color version of the movie shows the dress in a rust/brown with an off-white contrast. Very beautiful & feminine.

Anything worn by Audrey Hepburn is OK by me!
What a great idea for a book. Brilliant!!

I second Falafel’s assertion that anything Audrey wore is worthy of recreation. 🙂

I think the Mambo dress is perfect for just running around in, but I agree that I loved Gone With the Wind Dresses or even Rose’s dress from Titanic-the black lace one with the deep red under it and all the black beading!!! So awesome.

I’ve always been a fan of the white dress that Diane Lane wore in “Under the Tuscan Sun”- I searched online for the actual dress or a pattern after I saw the movie, but I couldn’t find anything! This book looks awesome, by the way 🙂
I’d recreate the dress Emma Roberts wears at the party in Nancy Drew. Too cute.
The dress on the cover -Marilyn Monroe’s dress would be fabulous to mske
Thanks so much for the chance to win that wonderful book.. I always dreamed of creating one of the dresses of Marie-Antoinette in the movie with Kirsten Dunst.
That would be wearing a dream 😀
thanks again :DD

The Pink Mambo Dress you made is BEAUTIFUL! I would love to make one of these or possibly an outfit from Pretty Woman.
I always love the dresses that the house wives wore in I Love Lucy and Leave It To Beaver. They are just so classic.
audrey hepburn from funny face!
If I were able to recreate ANY tinsel town dress, it would be the wedding dress that kristin stewart wore in breakdawn part one. Of course, I would then also have to create the body to go with it.
Wanting to see the dress is the only reason I actually went to see the film, and even then, I had to sneak away while my boyfriend was at work to avoid ridicule. But it is beautiful.
I would like to recreate June Cleaver’s dresses from Leave it to Beaver.
i WOULD LIKE TO SEE WHAT DRESS OPTIONS ARE AVAQILABLE IN THE BOOK TO CHOOSE FROM BUT CAN’T SEEM TO FIND A SITE THAT ALLOWS YOU TO SEE THE PICTURES!
I would like one of Bree Van De Camp’s dresses from Desperate Housewives
