Am I the only one who wore Units growing up?
I can’t remember wearing hardly anything else other than Units in 6th grade.
(The skirts, the dresses, the stretchy pants….and those totally awesome knit belts!!!!)
Although I have to admit that even though I wore Units almost daily they weren’t the actual “Units” brand. See, I grew up here in Utah (which I believe is the knock-off capital of the world) so of course in town there was a little shop open where you could go and pick your knit, have your measurements taken, and then a group of women sewed you up whatever units you would like…and they had bins and bins FULL of the band belts in all of the coolest colors…it was heaven. (I recently was thinking about those women…I bet they made a killing in the late 80’s.)
Anyways…those were the days, and the clothes. So remembering all of this I decided to try out a “Units’ outfit for Grace as my first official outfit for my drafting class.
Sure there are some issues…I don’t like the neckline or the sleeves…but I learned how to draft a pattern like this in just one piece, and some great tips on using knits so it wasn’t a total fail.
Plus…I got to do an entire post about “Units”.
(Even if it was like 3 months after I actually made the dress.)
Wednesday, I’m going to post the Units jumper I made Grace next—I kind of love it, even if it doesn’t have the band. So I’m warning you…there will be at least one more Units love post.
Consider yourself warned.

No one else (other than my sister) remembers Units, but I DO and now I know you do too! Units are the reason I learned to sew (that and having to hem every single pair of pants I own). So great.

I was just thinking about Units the other day. I made some of my own with Simplicity’s “Elements” patterns. I’m glad I saved the patterns – they might come back in style!

I totally wore those in 5th grade (see my class photo for proof), but mine were all made by my mom! And I remember my budding fashionista sense had me choosing weird color combos like some cross between teal and forest green paired with light pink.

That’s a cute turn on units. Good job. I too remember them, for all ages in all colors.

I remember them. I was in junior high and all the cool girls wore them. I didn’t. I have odd proportions so they didn’t look good on me. My best friend was 5’ll and she and her mom made her some since she couldn’t get any off the shelf. My mom worked and I had no desire to sew anything back then so I passed on the fad.

Never heard of them but then again I definitely wasn’t a cool kid.

OK. I LIVED in Units!! They were so comfortable!! (Though I do have to confess that it was high school – not 6th grade. Now you know I’m old. lol.) The dress is darling!! I can’t wait to see the jumper. 🙂

I loved Units. I totally remember the stores with clear (maybe they were white) plexiglass square shelving. My mom also made mine because we couldn’t afford the real thing. But boy did I love my homemade one-piece jumpsuit and wore my collection of knit belts with everything.

I loved Units. I grew up in Western MA and there was a store in the mall there. I remember scrunching up my belts. I loved them!

Oh my gosh I LOVED them!!! I think the store near us was named something like “Multiples”???? Anyway, one of the things I fell in love with was the catalog/line drawings of each unit! I’ll have to dig up old family pictures and blog sometime about my favorite combos! 🙂

Here in Colorado they were called Multiples and came from a store called “Kids Only”. My mom made mine because the real ones were too expensive.

I want someone to create units for grown ups again!!!

They kind-of have. The original designer is still selling such designs here: http://0348617.netsolhost.com/modboxmodulars.html. This wasn’t there the last time I did a search on this back in 2010. Lucky me I found them this time. 🙂

I wish I could find the patterns to buy! Does anybody know where I could find them?

I wore them in the late 80s and I could also wear them when I was pregnant. I had the pant jumper and the tube dress in several colors (red, black and white). My Units were purchased in a suburb in Maryland near Washington, D.C.
LulaRoe has a similar dress.

Don’t feel too bad, cuz I wore a ton of them when I taught ~ in my early 30s. I am so disappointed that I got rid of all of them. Can they still be bought?
