A couple of weeks ago while shopping I came across a darling little jumper for a little girl at H&M. I almost bought it (it was around $10 or so) but then when taking a second look at it realized it was just an updated version of a pillowcase dress.
So, I came home and made one. In 30 minutes. My kind of quick, naptime sewing project.
I did take a few pictures along the way to make a quick tutorial.
Here’s how I did it….
I was making a TALL size 6/7 and since I want her to be able to wear it awhile I did make it longer. It is about mid-calf on her now, but I know it won’t be by the end of summer. I am just hoping for knee-length then!
If you need to shorten the dress, you are going to need to shorten the first numbers in the dress piece and the ruffle. Both of them need to equal the length you want the dress.
It should now look like this on the back.
*Sorry I did make a mistake here….the straps are folded like bias tape (so there are 4 layers of fabric and they are sturdy) but they were NOT cut on the bias. They were actually cut from a 4 inch piece on the selvedge edge so the plaids would match, and then folded in like bias tape to make a 1 inch strap.
And you are done! A 30-minute dress that is perfect for Spring and Summer!
Love it! Gingham is my favorite summer fabric. Thanks for sharing.
This is perfect for summer and darling too. I might have to whip up a few for beach and pool cover ups.
Oh wow. I think even I could do this…thanks!
So cute for hot summer days!
What a cheery dress! Love the color and the ruffle at the bottom. I hope it fits for a while too b/c it would be so fun layered over a long sleeved white tee with boots and textured tights in the fall. 🙂
Totally cute! I can’t believe it only took you 30mins to put together, you’re so fast and talented 😉

I totally just made this dress. With my new serger it took no time at all and turned out super cute! I’ll post a link once I have it up. I just wanted to thank you for such a great tutorial of such an adorable little dress. I see many more of these in my future!
What a sweet dress! I heart it.

I missed this last week, its so cute! I adore that bright yellow fabric!
Quick question (love your blog btw). You mentioned your straps are bias tape. Did you make this yourself or prepurchased? If you made it yourself, how did you cut it on the bias to make bias tape if the pattern is still square? Wouldn’t it be in the shape of diamonds? Just wanted to see if you actually made bias tape or it’s just cut parallel to the selvege. Thanks! Looks fantastic!
Ok, maybe I’m totally missing it. I’m a very distracted sewer (two small kids always “helping”). But how do I make the bow?!?!
