I have a confession to make.
I’m having an affair.
It’s ok though, my husband knows all about it.
He doesn’t love it but he tolerates it….just as long as I keep it concealed in the basement.
Who am I having my affair with?
A little someone I call Pol. Y. Ester.
I’ve loved polyester since….forever I think actually.
(I know it’s weird.)
Even back in college I loved wearing thrifted 60’s and 70’s polyester clothes.
And since I’ve been sewing I’ve kept an ever growing stash of vintage polyester tucked away in the basement that I’ve never dared cut into. Until this week.
This week I finally decided to be brave and use some of my beloved polyester. I chose some navy blue with red pin stripes. Next I found what I thought would be the perfect pattern for fabric of such obvious groovyness. (I chose Butterick Pattern 6936 from 1972.) A little shorty dress with long sleeves and a rolled collar. Awesomeness…
I finished it this afternoon.
But the girl I made it for looked like this:
So I laid it out on the rug with the pattern and the red tights that will go with it and snapped the photo. I know it’s not the same as seeing it on but you get the picture.
I used some polyester…and I liked it…I can see many many more polyester posts in the future.
Oh and as for the Thrifted Thursdayness of this post—I bought all 3 yards of this fabric for $5 and the pattern was also thrifted with a price tag of 50 cents AND the zipper in the back—thrifted for 50 cents AND the thread (no I’m not kidding) I got it with a bag of thread I bought at a thrift store for a quarter. So this is a totally thrifted outfit from start to finish!
Oh how I love Thrifted Thursdays.
I hope your day is an excellent one.

I am so with you on polyester! You can find some great prints with it, and it is easy to work with! Why do we feel like it is some shameful secret??? Your top / dress came out great!!!

I agree with above comments! I go to my thrift store on .99cent day and totally score on the “odd” fabrics. I have to limit myself to going once a month because my house can’t handle any more “deals” I bring home! I have some lovely pink and yellow striped polyester (5 yards for .99cents) that would look great like the dress you made. Thanks for the inspiration.

Ooh super cute! I’d love to see a picture of it on in the next few weeks. 🙂 I like how polyester looks but don’t like how it feels when I wear it- the itchy non breathable stuff anyway. Obviously not all polyesters are equal. 🙂

Polyester DEFINITELY has a place in the world, any one who says otherwise is just a fabric snob.

I LOVE it! My sister just ordered two polyester dresses from etsy or something. Anyway, they’re DIVINE—blue and white polka dots from the 80’s and a fantastic salmon dress from the 60’s. She kept asking what “double knit” meant. We told her about the pants with the seem sewn up the front of them, and then she understood, but they were still magical. So glad you love it, too.
