Here is the last of the Christmas presents that I made this year. These two for some nieces on the other side of the family. It was kind of fun to make matching dresses for a change. The theme I had for these little dresses was a vintage prairie look (that totally makes no sense to you, I know, but in my mind it did). I wanted soft, muted colors and some fun prairie-style aprons on the fronts. I hope they liked them….
Any fun sewing projects this week? Liz and I are currently taking an advanced pattern-making class this semester and are knee-deep in learning how to measure correctly (way more challenging than I ever thought–who knew measuring people was such an art, and that you “properly” take a million measurements–and then why do we never come up with the same numbers as our Master Instructor?) making “perfect” patterns and sewing test garments. And I won’t lie, feeling a bit overwhelmed….
So, tell us about your fun projects, we need some light-hearted sewing talk!

These are darling! I love the peter pan collar. 🙂 I have a slew of (beginner) pattern making books checked out from the library, I’m finding them overwhelming, I can’t imagine an advanced class!! Woo-hoo for both of you!

adorable!!! i love everything about them:) my goal this year is to really use some patterns and learn to sew some clothes for the kiddos. i have always by passed clothes due to the lack of a searger, but now i have one and just need to learn it. but thankfully this weekend i finished organizing my sewing room and im ready to do in a few days. any suggestions on pattern shops? i need something harder then a peasant dress but nothing that takes too long to make.

Love these dresses! The almost matching look is my favorite 🙂 Good luck with your pattern class…I”m intimidated just thinking about that! This week I’m trying outerweear for PR&P sew at home. I’ve been waiting for an excuse to try ya’ll’s Audrey Cape after admiring it for months!
@2LittleHooligans…try Oliver +S patterns (available lots of online places and their own site). They have some beginner dresses that are adorable and the directions are super well written and easy to understand; plus you come out with an adorable dress or pants that your kids will love!

Super stoked to have found your blog. It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for. And liZ, your description was like reading verbatim from my daily diary.

Those are adorable! I really want to take a pattern making class, but there is no way I could do an advanced one! Maybe one for kids…
I’m been busy trying to make an outwear look for Project Run & Play! Hoping to get it done by Friday!

Love how they coordinate! Good luck with the pattern making class. I should take a beginner’s class. 🙂 The last thing I sewed up was a fleece coat for my daughter’s friend, using my favorite “sportcoat” pattern by simplicity (can’t remember the number off the top of my head but the girl’s pattern only has four pieces though I did add a collar, so five this time) and a couple of fleece earwarmers from At Second Street- totally easy and so cute and fast.

Ashley,
Our local community college has a Fashion Institute program. We are taking their “patterning by measurements” class.

These two are just adorable!!! Love the Peter Pan collar and the little puffy sleeves. I’d have trouble with a beginner’s pattern drafting course. Apart from making bags, I like the security of a pattern.

Those dresses are so darling! You’re getting me excited–I also have 2 little dresses on my sewing docket!

Oh what cute dresses!
This week I’m making a shirt for my 7 year old from the winter Ottobre Design magazine. I love Ottobre for kids clothes. I also have a dress from the newest issue cut for my 2 year old, and after that I’m sewing for ME!

I wish I could retake patternmaking! I learned with Connie Amaden Crawford years ago at FIDM. I can make patterns but often just use commercial patterns because I am lazy! I have been obsessed with 40’s children’s patterns lately and am working on a wool forties coat for my two year old and a fake fur vest for myself.
I love, love love those dresses. I could see my little one feeding the chickens in one of those!
