We can’t just NOT sew along for Project Run and Play! So this week, of course, I had boys on the brain. And this is a project I have been wanting to do for awhile. A little man romper for the cutest toddler in my life.
I used what was the bodice pattern of a vintage pattern shirt (for a girl—-shh!), took out the puffed sleeves, totally rebuilt the collar and worked with it until it came out like a little boy’s 1950’s shirt. My one regret is that I didn’t make it quite long enough (he was napping while I was sewing) and I thought I had cut it long enough but hadn’t. I am sad he won’t be able to wear it with pants tucked in, but I might just have to make another one for that.
I then cut and sewed three pair of shorts before finally ending up with these. (I just never realized how long of a rise a toddler really has….so learn from me, measure first…then cut and sew!) I knew I wanted them high waisted, and then added the buttons on for details.
By the way, my husband thinks they look like “Oompa, Loompa” buttons, so now I am second guessing them….but boys need a few details too, right? (said sheepishly)
(….reading Nancy Drew…every toddler’s fave)
Ok, I need your help….leave the buttons or chop them off?
{Post Edit–The buttons are off…I will show you soon what I did.}

I would say: CHOP THEM OFF.
🙂
Many kind regards,

I think maybe only having the middle two would help loose the Oompa Loompa look? Very cute though!
it"s me says
Nothing Oompa Loompa about them…
they are so cute, just adorable. I
love the collar and whole look! You
are so talented.

I thought the buttons looked really cute…until I read the Oompa Loompa bit and then that’s all I saw. Sorry! I like Kristin’s suggestion or maybe use gray buttons instead?
Either way, it’s an adorable outfit.:)

I thought the buttons were screaming for some suspenders! I thought more Mickey mouse than oompa loompa though 😉
Bratling says
Hm. Need to be the same color as the shorts, and then it looks like something you went to someplace like Strasburg Kids and dropped $200 on!

Sorry, but I say chop. Fabric covered buttons don’t have the right vibe for this outfit. I think shiny black buttons would be awesome though! I do love the romper as a whole though, great job (as always!)

I say switch for a different color, and add suspenders so they look like they’re there for a reason besides adding detail.

Leave it the way it is! Too cute! You only get a few years to dress little boys like this!
I just laugh at the idea of trying to get my 7 and 8 year old boy in this! Ha Ha!
He is adorable!

I think black or charcoal buttons would look better. These yellow buttons stand out too much and take away from the simplicity of the outfit. It’s just adorable otherwise!
Whatever Dee-Dee wants says
Could it be any cuter? No! It is so dang cute and I love the buttons.
Tricia says
I don’t mind the buttons, but if you were to chop them off…I think a waistband with some tuck details would look great in their place. I love the romper, and those cherubic cheeks. Love it all.

I did something very similar to this for my boys’ Easter outfit. I mean, it’s almost exactly the same. White collared shirt, gray-ish pant/shorts romper but they had a little tie and the buttons were on the faux pocket flap on the front of the pants. I’m not sure if you want to add pocket flaps to the front of the pants but that might give you the details you were looking for.

Oh my gosh, so cute! Don’t chop them. The shorts are just too cute the way they are! Great job!
Amy says
I vote chop them in that color! I think they’d look ADORABLE in a navy!
So CUTE!

So cute! I’m looking to make some more rompers for the Boy, I think this would look really awesome with a kind of nautical theme – a striped shirt in some muted tones and little anchors on the shorts! xx

Cute! I say have buttons, but put them on vertically, like Mickey Mouse’s pants 🙂

I agree with changing the color. The yellow pops so much that is all you notice. He is SO adorable!

Okay so his little tummy-out-stand just kills me because my little girl and my friends little man both do the same thing and i just want to eat them.
This outfit is super cute… but I do have to admit, the buttons are a wee bit distracting from the classic lines… perhaps a darker grey than the pants?

Hi there, the outfit is adorable and the buttons just make it that more cute. Your little boy is at the age when you can get away with things like that. Enjoy it while you can. I have recently found your blog and am now following you, and will visit often. Please stop by my blog and perhaps you would like to follow me also. Have a wonderful day. Hugs, Chris

I say chop them off, but make an adorable pair of suspenders. I may totally nerdy, but I think little boys are too cute in suspenders!!

I think this is adorable! I love the buttons–so vintage looking. But I am sure it is equally darling without them. Suspenders?
