One of my favorite traditions as a child was Christmas breakfast. It was the one day of the year when we got to drink Grandma Ruth’s hot chocolate or “French Chocolate” as we called it. There’s absolutely nothing French about it….but I can promise you that it is absolutely delicious.
We always had an egg casserole (an egg strata), cinnamon rolls and as much of this hot chocolate as we could drink; stirring it with candy canes and always leaving the table with ginormous chocolate grins. And now I get to watch my kids do the same. And it warms my heart.
So, if you want to add a new hot chocolate tradition to your Christmas morning breakfast here is the delicious {and super easy} recipe.
Grandma Ruth’s French Chocolate
1 16 oz. can of Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup
1 8 oz container of Cool Whip
The night before you want to make the hot chocolate (Christmas Eve at our house) mix the whole can of Hershey’s syrup into the 8 oz container of Cool Whip. Put in the refridgerator overnight. The next morning, heat milk on the stovetop (we do this slowly while we are opening presents). Stir in 3-4 heaping Tablespoons of the chocolate mixture into the warm milk. Continue stirring until it melts. It makes for such a thick, rich and velvety hot cocoa that you will not be disappointed!
As a side note, I have always wanted to try this with real whipping cream….and I think it might be the year. I will let you know after Christmas. And in the meantime, have a very Merry Christmas!
