Recently I wanted to make something new for the front porch. But where as our time and budget are both limited this is what I came up with…
…a “new” wreath (made from an old wreath and some flowers I bought at the Dollar Store) and a new coat of paint for the front door. (The door had been white but I literally mixed up a whole bunch of left over paints in the garage to have enough to paint the door a new color which looks like this and miraculously matches the rest of our house.)
Then without warning my husband decided to jump on the crafty fix it up bandwagon and one up me. This is what he made….
…one of those benches-from-bed posts complete with a lifting lid and storage inside. One of our neighbors makes these and my husband thinks they are the greatest so when my parents were getting rid of their old bed posts he took them and built this.
He bought some of that paint that is mixed incorrectly from Home Depot (that you can buy for really cheap) and let Simon and the other neighbor boys paint the bench. (I thought I was going to die when I pulled in the driveway and a whole bunch of 7 year olds were going to town with paint brushes in the front yard.) But, they did a great job and then my husband gave it a little bit of distressing. Project complete.
I know, it’s not an amazing transformation. (Hence the absence of before and after photos.) But for the $14 it cost us I’ll take it and enjoy the change.
But heaven help me—this project has gotten my husband’s creative juices flowing—and this past week he has been gathering supplies to remodel our kitchen.
This bench is gorgeous and I love the colour of your door. Looks great!

Wow! That bench is seriously awesome! Your wreath and door are pretty cool too! Sometimes my best colors come from mixing what’s left over!
That bench is so cool! 🙂 I’m super impressed with your door color. I’m pretty sure the people that lived in our house before we did mixed paints for the living room and it was not a pretty shade of brown, if you catch my drift. We painted as soon as we moved in. 🙂

So can I borrow your husband for a while? My husband would NEVER do that, especially without many and varied promptings/begging/threats from me. It looks great.
I think it IS an amazing transformation. It’s amazing what something small like a wreath or door can do for morale. Love the blog, plus we share the same last name so you get kudos there.

What a beautiful porch! I love the wreath. You’d never guess those flowers weren’t real. The bench is so stylish… what a clever hubby. The distressing finishes it off beautifully.

your hubby totally gave me some inspiration. i just put one of the girls cribs on the front porch. all i had to do was cut the legs off about 8″ and now i have a new bench. i was just going to put a free sign on it by the road and now im so glad i didnt!! all it needs now is a fresh coat of paint and some handmade pillows:) thanks! now i just have to wait and see what my hubby has to say about it:)
I am in love with that bench – and I happen to have to olde beds just taking up space in my barn – I know what I will be making for next spring. Tone

It sounds like you and your husband are a great team –What ever color that paint is it is a beautiful shade. –I would have loved to see the 7 year olds painting -what a great project for all of them to be proud
