Today is the tutorial for the chrysanthemum flowers that I made for the girls. They are easy, but do take a bit of time since you are handsewing them…so be prepared to put in a good movie…and handstitch away.
You will need:
1-2 yards of man made fabric (I used a shimmery lining fabric for these ones)
scissors
a candle or lighter
Step 1
Cut out your petal shapes. I just folded the fabric and cut about 8 or 10 at a time. I tried a couple of different shapes but ended up with the pointy ends being my favorite. You will need about 20-30 per finished flower.
Step 2
Singe all the edges with your heat source so they curl up tight. *Be careful not to let it touch the flame, just the heat from the flame.
Step 3
Make your bustles out of the singed fabric. (I am switching fabrics on you—it was hard to see with the brown.) Take one petal…and fold it in half.
Then fold it in half again….this is what I refer to as a bustle…but you can call it whatever you like:)
This is what it should look like with a petal. Handstitch the bottom to secure the bustle.
Step 4
Continue this process, sewing each bustle to the previous one until you have the size chrysanthemum you would like. You can attach it to a pin or at this point handstitch it on the actual sash.
And you are done!

I love these flowers and am so thankful for the tutorial.
Did you do one bustle per petal? Just checking, thanks!

oh, that is gorgeous!

Rachel,
I folded each bustle separately but when I was stitching I would sometimes stitch on one and sometimes two. I just kind of went with what I liked together…..hope that helps!

I couldn’t get the fabric to curl, it just wanted to burn. I used polyester lining fabric. Beautiful flower though, I love what you did.
