Maternity Shirts to My Little Girls Skirts–A How To…

The time has come…
…for my maternity clothes…

Don’t ask me “how many weeks along” I am—I can never remember. All I know is that #1. I’m excited about the baby, #2. I’m due at the beginning of September, and #3. I need to start wearing real clothes again and not just pajama pants and my husbands sweatshirts.

 

So the other day I pulled out the bins. And wanted to cry. Not because I’m all big and round (which I am) but because my clothes were all so ugly and old and dated and I couldn’t face wearing them through one more pregnancy.

 

In a fit of despair I piled up the clothes to take them to the local donation center…but then later that afternoon I had an idea and I pulled out the rotary cutter.

 

And in no time flat my Where’s Waldo-ish maternity skirt became a new play skirt for Gracie!

 


Here’s what I did:

 

#1. I measured how long I wanted Grace’s skirt to be (from waist to knee) and then added about 2 inches (enough space to make a casing for the elastic waist band).

 

#2. Then I wacked the skirt part off the shirt. (The awesome part of skirts from shirts is that the bottom and sides are already finished for you.)

 

#3. Next I added some decorations made from the scraps in my bin. (I just sewed on a ribbon for stems, scrunched flowers, and flat leaf pieces with unfinished edges.)

#4. Finally I sewed the casing around the top and insterted the elastic (I cut the elastic for my wasitbands the exact size as Gracie’s waist…then by the time I sew them together it is tight enough to keep the skirt on but loose enough to give her room to grow).

 

It was the fastest project ever…and now all those shirts I couldn’t face even one more time are new and fun. Grace loves them…and I can’t stop making them.

 

 

This one is made from a maternity sweater!

 

The good news is Gracie has a bunch of play clothes for the coming spring and summer.
The bad news is I still am stuck wearing pajama’s and sweatshirts.

    That’s some awesome reuse of old clothes. Love the flower on the skirt. I have a bag of old stuff that I’ve convinced myself I’ll make into something new and and exciting… These are great inspiration =) x
