Every year I am on the hunt for cute white t-shirts with a cute detail of some sort. Well, last year I found some really cute ones at Target, and this year I found these cute white tees at Walmart for exactly $5. So I picked up a couple. I think the ruffle detail at the collar is darling, and makes them look more expensive. The rest of the fabric was from my stash. The bow is actually a pin to take it off the dress before washing. I dislike crazy-washed bows….hence the pin.
I have had this made for a while now…but the weather here has been so yuck…that no photographs until yesterday, which were taken super quick before dinner and then I got the “why-are-you-making-me-do-this” smile.
There are quite a few shirt dress tutorials out there…so I won’t reinvent the wheel. But it is essentially the cupcake skirt tutorial sewn to a tee (with only 2 layers of course).
And a couple of hints about working with knits….yes they do stretch more than cotton. BUT DON’T BE AFRAID. My advice is to use a lot more pins. I do double the amount of pins that I use normally as to not get that stretched-out look.
Other than that, my only other advice is to go slow. I do use a stretch stitch (that might be my made up name—it looks like a lightning bolt on your machine) when I am sewing knit to knit….but I didn’t on this dress because of the cotton. And it worked just fine. Just sew slowly and try not to pull on the knit. And if it puckers, just try again. It’s ok.
Happy Sewing and Happy Friday! It’s a pulling weeds day around here!

Cute! I love the colors.
I bought that white shirt, too. I can’t resist anything with ruffles.
A t-shirt dress is somewhere on my never-ending list of projects to try. I think I’ll have to start with a thrifted/torn/stained shirt first though. Just to make sure I can do it!
