A few weeks ago my mom made this dress for Gracie. It is made from a pattern from the 1950’s and I love the Shirley Templeness of it. Looking at Gracie in this helped me decide that this is the year that I am going to make her Easter dress. I can do this. I won’t be afraid. I have several patterns, all from the 50’s and 60’s, that I think would be awesome. BUT, I can’t decide on the pattern (full and frilly or plain and classic) or the fabric—I have everything from a chocolate Easter bunny print, to a traditional pastel pink to a black silk with butterflies. However, time is running out and I have to get started. It’s time to be a big girl and make a decision….

That is adorable! Is there a pettiskirt under it? How is it so full?

It’s a Simplicity pattern from the 1950’s…I’ll ask my mom for the pattern number next time I’m at her place…I love it to.

Oh, about the pettiskirt…Gracie doesn’t have one. I am determined to find her one to wear with her easter dress (whatever it may be).
(I had pettiskirts when I was little and want to get her some as well.)
But for the photo she just has a white tu tu on under her dress. I’m sure that would work for these kinds of dresses but I just want to splurge and get her the real deal.

She looks like a mini Grace Kelly. Simply adorable! I too would love to find this pattern.
Thank you for sharing!

Not sure what kind of pettiskirt you are looking for, but there is a fun tutorial here that I have used in the past:

Classic never goes out of style! Good luck deciding.

Gorgeous! Dresses for little girls were so much more ‘girly’ decades ago, I think!
I would go for the pink for the Easter dress. The Easter bunny print is too holiday-specific to get much use. (That would make a cute apron or pinafore, though, which can be worn over several sizes as she grows.) Black silk is too, uh, wintery?
I’m sure you’ll do a great job with the dress. It’s such a blast to dress a little girl! (Haven’t done that in years as my daughter is 26.)

This is gorge. I recently made a ‘proper little girls dress’ for my little one from the Fiona Bell Book (Sewn With Love/Vintage Style for Kids)- I can highly recommend it. It’s full of beautiful ‘proper’ dresses and has a cd with all the patterns. You can see my version at my blog which was my first attempt at pattern sewing but I’m defo off for some more beautiful fabrics to make more.

I’m showing my age but, yeah, I remember those scratcy pettis that made the skirt poof out full, for church, parties and class. Girls never wore pants then, which is hard to believe. So hard to sit with the starched crinolines that always seemed to show, and you really had to watch it bending ever even a little. Little boys loved to look.
Thanks for the memory. My girls were never into “girlie” things like this, so sad, and I doubt my son had the legs.
