Yea…it’s pretty bad….
….at least it cost me less that $5.
Here’s the story:
I saw this cool lampshade on Anthropologie awhile back and I thought hey—that would make a great skirt. (Little did I know.)
The next day I ran to the store and bought two cheap T-shirts (total cost $2.12) and got to work.
If horizontal ruffle skirts could be made from T-shirts then why not vertical ruffle skirts? (It all seemed so logical.)
I cut, I ruffled, I cut and ruffled some more and then I sewed and sewed. Then I put Grace and the skirt into the mini van and raced off to meet Elizabeth to take some photos.
Shortly we arrived at our destination where the skirt went on and my smile came off.
WHAT WAS THIS HIDEOUS THING THAT I HAD MADE!!!???!!!
And looking at the picture now I don’t really know what is actually the worst part…the skirt with all it’s heinous splendor or the saggy baggy white tights that don’t match or the T-shirt of mine that poor Grace is wearing on top of her real shirt because that afternoon was freezing. It’s all too horrible for words.
1 ugly skirt + 1 enormous T-shirt + wrinkly tights = The total toddler outfit of shame
The only good thing I can say is that this time my craft fail only set me back $2.12 AND that next time I get a brilliant idea to make Gracie an article of clothing based on items found in housewares I’m going to remember the lampshade skirt of doom and just save my two dollars.

I don’t think it looks *that* bad but I do appreciate you sharing your ‘fail’. We all have those. I still have a skirt refashion from two pair of pants that hasn’t come out right. It went from horrible to bad. I’m not sure it will ever get to good.

LOL – oh my! I had a sewing failure yesterday too – thought I had this great idea, looked at it when it was finished, and realized my romper gave my little girl a saggy crotch. Uncool. Very uncool. I was very demotivated after that, so figured I would catch up on my American Idol instead of continue. Good choice .

Most of my sewing fails (there have been quite a few) have become my daughter’s favorite outfits. Something about my lame idea meeting her bizarre punk rock/pioneer girl sensibilities and the whole thing becomes a prolonged embarrassment as I have to repeatedly pretend to family and strangers alike that I did not in fact make the monstosity that my girl seems so fond of and wears three times a week. So, quick, hide the skirt before the girl falls in love with it and you have to look at everyday for six months 😀

I’m glad I found your blog–I’m enjoying your tutorials! As for this skirt, maybe you were a season before your time–vertical ruffles are hip now! Google images of vertical ruffles and you’ll see what I mean.
