Today we get to share with you how to make these fun sunflower pillows.
(And we have kits available in our shop for $15 if you want to make them exactly how we made them!)
Sooooo…let’s get started!
Supplies needed:
1/2 yard of fabric for the pillow cover
Mustard (or yellow) colored felt for the petals
Brown (or black) felt for the middle of the sunflower
Thread that matches your felt
A 16″ x 16″ pillow form (these can be purchased online HERE, at your local craft store, or even at Wal-Mart)
Instructions:
To make these pillows you can use the printable instructions found in HERE.
It will give you step by step all the measurements and cutting instructions. Just follow them but stop after you get to step #2 and follow these next steps to create your sunflower then return to step #3 and finish up your pillow cover.
How to Make your Sunflower:
#1. Print the templates found HERE: filename-1
And then use them to cut out 1 center for your sunflower, 6 small flower petals, and 12 large petals.
#2. On your pillow front fabric square place 6 of your large, felt petals as shown in the photo below.
When you are satisfied with the arrangement secure them into place. You can do this by pinning or spray basting but I like to use a simple swipe of a regular glue stick right down the center of each petal.
#3. Using thread that matches your petals stitch a line down the center of each petal.
Start about 1/2 inch from the tip of the petal and stitch all the way down into the center of the flower as shown in the photo below.
#4. Place your remaining 6 large, felt petals on to your pillow as shown in the photo below.
To attach them simply secure in place and then stitch down the center as you did in step #3.
#5. Place the 6 small, felt petals on your pillow as shown in the photo below.
Secure and stitch each petal as you have done in the previous 2 steps.
The felt will start to rise as you sew down the center of each petal…and you can gently raise and position each side of the petal to give your flower more of a three-dimensional look.
#6. Place the felt circle in the center of your circle, secure, and then stitch around circumference of the circle.
Use matching thread and stitch about 1/4 inch away from the edge of the pillow.
When you get to this point you can be finished OR you can add more stitching in the center for some fun texture.
In the photo below I just straight stitched in a grid.
And that is it! You are done!
I liked them so much I made them in two different styles and put kits together for each of them over in the shop.
There is the navy blue one:
Which you can find the kit for HERE.
And then there is the black and white gingham one:
Which you can find HERE.
Each kit costs $15 (which includes the price of shipping anywhere in the continental United States) and includes everything you need to make the pillow except for the pillow form.
Whew! Ok! So, that should be everything….what you need to make the pillows, links to the printable templates and instructions, step by step instructions, and links to the kits if you would like one of those as well. You should be all set!
But if you have any questions along the way just leave a comment or send and email and I will help you out!
