In case you missed this a while ago during Melly Sews’30 days of Sundresses earlier in the summer……here is it’s encore presentation.
When Melissa asked for a sundress for summer, it was kind of a tough one for me because I wanted to make something “extraordinarily out-of-the-box creative.” But no inspiration was coming. (Don’t you hate it when that happens? Argh.)
Until one day I saw my {almost} seven-year old drawing flowers and laughed to myself. Number one, because they are the same flowers that I drew in First Grade…and number two, they are the same flowers that every First Grade girl I ever taught also drew.
So, I thought that instead of making some “out-of-the-box extraordinary” I would make something to capture a First Grade memory before it slipped away.
Which is better than extraordinary, right? (Please say yes…..)
And this is the result. A simple sundress with drawings of her First Grade flowers on it.
I only know simple embroidery, so I just used what I know. Running stitches, back stitches, satin stitched and french knots. And after a few nights of embroidering and vegging on the couch….I sewed the skirt onto a rectangular bodice and then sewed on some easy straps.
This poor girl may not have a scrapbook (I am a TERRIBLE scrapbook-er) but she will have her First Grade flowers to remember.

That is adorable, what a brilliant idea!
Gorgeous! I am a terrible scrap-booker too. Luckily I blog so I’ve taken approximately eleventy billion photos of my children in the last 3 years 🙂
That is a wonderful idea! How awesome for your daughter to have not only her own drawings preserved forever but have them preserved in a dress made by her mother! Just beautiful!!
That’s so cute!! 🙂 Have a happy weekend! Hugs, Holly
That’s just so precious, I actually teared up! And you’re right, that’s exactly what first grade flowers across the country look like. This would be so cute around the bottom of a cardigan sweater, too. Hmmm…
I love this! It is extraordinarily special! I’ve really fallen off the scrapbooking bandwagon. Olivia was asking about her first baby doll and I pulled out her scrapbook to show her all the stellar documentation, then Grace wanted to see her scrapbook, too, which had enough pages in it to stand up to her shorter attention span. Then, Addie lost interest after her first page, which is good, because there was nothing more. 🙁
I love this dress! What a wonderful idea, and it turned out so great!
Wonderful!!!
Oh-sew-sweet! Blessings!
that’s sew taylor
Every little girl should have a skirt with embroidered flowers. So sweet, and I love the inspiration.
This is such a sweet way to capture your daughter’s creativity and make her something special!
LOVE – I might have to copy that.
This is so adorable that it makes me want to tear up. Once she grows out of it, you should make sure to keep it around for her; I’m sure she will appreciate it even more when she is older (and maybe then she can turn it into vintage tea towels).
